EMA NIKOLOVSKA & SEAN SHIBE

ORLANDO, THE ETERNAL ADVENTURER In a highly original program for mezzo­-soprano and guitar, Ema Nikolovska and Sean Shibe trace the legendary troubadour’s story through space and time. Journeying from the medieval Chanson de Roland to Ariosto’s famous epic, to Virginia Woolf ’s 1928 novel, they explore fantastical worlds and encounter the great adventures of life: love, conflict, and the search for one’s own identity. Works by Franz Schubert, Detlef Glanert, Thomas Adès, and others, as well as newly commissioned pieces by Sasha Scott and Cassandra Miller provide the musical tapestry.

Fit fürs Abi

A young man is deeply in love in Wilhelm Müller's poem cycle "Die schöne Müllerin." Although the story begins with butterflies in the stomach, it takes an unhappy turn and ends badly. Franz Schubert's music captures the soul drama of the unhappily in love. "Fit fürs Abi" offers a concert experience with an introduction to the work.

Trio E. T. A.

Trio E.T.A. is an Estonian instrumental music group formed in 2010 by Aet Maatee, Taavo Remmel, and Erki Pärtelpoeg. They released their debut album "Eesti Transatlantilised Akordid" in 2012.

HUMANS

Leipzig Ballet, under Rémy Fichet, presents "Humans," a double bill exploring creative and abstract dance narratives. Louis Stiens examines dance's embodiment, its impact on choreography, and Leipzig Ballet's history, linking to Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony. Sofia Nappi blends ballet, contemporary dance, and performance, exploring Baroque and modern elements with music by Clara Schumann and Henry Purcell, reflecting on femininity across eras.

Sung poetry

Few eras have united music and poetry with such profundity as the German Romantic period. In this concert, the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, under the direction of Justin Doyle, offers a sonorous and expressive journey into the very heart and soul of Romantic choral music – from the intimate songs of Franz Schubert to the powerful choral works of Johannes Brahms and the lyrical elegance of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.The programme also includes music by Robert Schumann and Peter Cornelius, as well as a striking contrast: a work by the acclaimed German composer Elisabeth Fusseder (born 2000). In In waldeslust, with texts by Ernst Moritz Arndt, Emerenz Meier and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, she leads the listener into a forest whose Romantic innocence has long since faded.The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir is conducted by Justin Doyle, who is chief conductor of the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin. In addition, he serves as professor of choral conducting at the Hanns Eisler School of Music. This concert is a tribute to both word and tone, where poetry is brought to life in a spellbinding sonic landscape.The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir was founded in 1945 by the then 27-year-old Eric Ericson and has since occupied a central place in both Swedish and international musical life. It is among the world’s foremost professional vocal ensembles and has enjoyed a close collaboration with The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Konserthuset Stockholm since 2003.

Schubert’s “Great” C major Symphony is considered by many to epitomise romanticism in orchestral music. The first call of the horns is typical of the era – evoking a sound world that is at once warm, idyllic and full of yearning. Conductor Zubin Mehta has included two further Romantic works on the programme: Carl Maria von Weber’s overture to the fairy-tale opera Oberon and Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with its combination of heartfelt expression and overwhelming virtuosity. Himari, who comes from Japan and is just 13 years old, makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker as soloist.

On March 26, 1828, the first anniversary of Beethoven's death, Franz Schubert held his first and only public concert featuring his own works in Vienna. The program included his song "Auf dem Strom," the grand E-flat major Piano Trio D 929, along with other songs and chamber music. The concert featured celebrated local artists, much like this performance with "spring" talents surrounding pianist Lukas Sternath. This includes Schubert's late E-flat major Piano Trio, known for its heavenly lengths.

Schubert's meditative "Nachtstück" for piano trio opens a program that explores time and timelessness. Debussy's Préludes and Violin Sonata, Steve Reich's eight-part "Cello Counterpoint" (played here on the viola), and Helmut Lachenmann's playful Schubert Variations offer complementary perspectives to early Romantic Viennese ideas. The concert concludes with two timeless Schubert masterpieces: the "Grand Rondeau" for piano four hands and the famous "Trout Quintet". The concert will have two intermissions.

Signum Quartett Schubert in Soweto

Dieter Schnebel's essay "In Search of Liberated Time" explored Schubert's late works and their unique handling of time. South African violist Xandi van Dijk of the Signum Quartet connects this theme to the 30th anniversary of the end of apartheid. The quartet commissioned South African composers and will perform Schubert in Soweto. A pre-concert talk will be held at 4 pm.

Alfred Brendel famously wrote about Schubert's sonatas, describing their enigmatic nature. Schubert's last "Grand Sonata" features dreamlike melodies and eerie nuances. Prokofiev's seventh sonata contrasts harsh percussion with a warm "Andante caloroso." Liszt's Petrarch-inspired sonnets offer new soundscapes. Lukas Sternath expertly navigates these diverse musical worlds.

Cuarteto Casals. Eckart Runge Schuberts Schönstes

The award-winning Cuarteto Casals celebrates over 25 years of success, bringing Spanish music from their homeland and Schubert's finest to Heidelberg. The program features popular Andalusian folklore-rooted works by Joaquín Turina and elegant music by Basque composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga. Cellist Eckart Runge joins for Schubert's String Quintet, a poignant work composed shortly before the composer's death. The concert will be recorded and broadcast. An introductory talk will be held on March 9, 2025.

CHRISTIANE KARG, MALCOLM MARTINEAU & HELMUT MOOSHAMMER

Mignon, Ophelia, and Mary, Queen of Scots—these three towering figures of literature and history provide the inspiration for an evening of words and music created by Christiane Karg, Malcolm Martineau, and actor Helmut Mooshammer. In addition to Goethe settings by Beethoven, Schubert, Wolf, Duparc, and Josephine Lange and Ophelia songs by Brahms, Strauss, Chausson, and Wolfgang Rihm, the program also includes Robert Schumann’s Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart, the composer’s final vocal cycle written in 1852.

Anna El-Khashem. Keval Shah Was blüht denn da?

Anna El-Khashem, who declared her ambition to be an opera singer as early as kindergarten, launched an impressive career, joining the Saint Petersburg Conservatory at 17 and the Bavarian State Opera's studio three years later. In 2018, she won the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and recently debuted there as Zerlina. Her Heidelberg debut features romantic flower songs and Russian art songs.

Klang der Stille

Florian Illies, known for his chronicle of German sentiment, has recently captivated audiences with compilations on 1913 and love during times of hate. His latest work delves into German Romanticism, portraying Caspar David Friedrich as a painter of devout introspection on the edge of abstraction. The symphony concert "Sound of Silence" complements this, showing Friedrich wasn't alone in his artistic journey.
