DANISH STRING QUARTET

Tue, Jun 10, 2025, 19:30
Danish String Quartet (String Quartet)
Audiences of the Danish String Quartet know that the ensemble likes to blur the boundaries between folk music and classical music. In this concert, the four Scandinavians combine traditional melodies by 18th-century Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan with works from different eras to create a sound world that transcends styles and genres. In addition to Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for String Quartet, which evoke Russian dance rhythms and sacred chants, the program includes Mozart’s delightful F-major Divertimento and Caroline Shaw’s Haydninspired Entr’acte.

JUILLIARD STRING QUARTET

Wed, Jan 22, 2025, 19:30
Juilliard String Quartet (String Quartet)
According to Jörg Widmann, Beethoven’s Opus 130 represents the “string quartet of string quartets.” His own Eighth and Tenth Quartets were written in response to the Viennese master’s late work, in particular its famous slow movement, titled “Cavatina.” The New York–based Juilliard String Quartet frames Widmann’s “Beethoven Studies” with their historical model, including both its traditional version and the Grosse Fuge, the work’s original finale.

CASTALIAN STRING QUARTET

Konzerthaus Berlin, Kleiner Saal (Berlin)
Castalian String Quartet
13 children's dresses, hand-sewn from the life jackets of refugees, collected at the “Lifejacket Graveyard” in Lesvos, Greece: each dress represents one million of the 13 million children on the run worldwide. The installation “Ungrievable Lifes” by British artist Caroline Burraway inspired composer Charlotte Bray to create her work of the same name, which consists of 13 movements - one for each vest dress, one for each million refugee children. The young Castalian String Quartet premiered the work in 2023 and continues to include it in its program - as a reminder not to forget the fate of these children.

Novus String Quartet

Fri, Apr 12, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Jaeyoung Kim (Violin), Young-uk Kim (Violin), Kyuhyun Kim (Viola), Wonhae Lee (Cello)
For its debut concert at the Elbphilharmonie, the Novus String Quartet has come up with something special: all three works on the programme are set in E-flat major. This is a key that is generally particularly soft and bright, but it can be heroic and majestic too, as heard in Beethoven’s »Eroica« Symphony. With works by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Shostakovich, the four exceptional musicians from Korea bring out the key’s full range of timbre, forging a link in the process between the First Viennese School, Romantic music and 20th century Russian avant-garde. Since it was founded in 2007 at the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul, the Novus String Quartet has become one of the country’s leading chamber music ensembles, and has created a sensation in Europe, winning prizes at the prestigious ARD Music Competition and at the Mozart Competition in Salzburg. The well-known Belcea Quartet has been coaching the quartet since 2016. After the Elbphilharmonie concerts scheduled for 2021 had to be cancelled as a result of the coronavirus, the Novus String Quartet is making its first appearance in Hamburg this season.
