Symphoniker Hamburg / Magdalena Kožená / Gergely Madaras

Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 11:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Symphoniker Hamburg, Magdalena Kožená (Mezzo-Soprano), Gergely Madaras (Conductor)
Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy were both influenced by the same musical movement. Fauré's orchestral suite from his incidental music to "Pelléas et Mélisande" is considered his finest orchestral work. Israeli conductor and composer Ohad Ben-Ari, based in Berlin, will premiere his song cycle "Paterson" with the Hamburg Symphony. The cycle is based on Ron Padgett's poetry from Jim Jarmusch's film. Olivier Messiaen's "Poèmes pour Mi" is a tribute to his wife Claire Delbos, written during her pregnancy. Smetana's "The Moldau" will be performed, reflecting the fact that the Vltava (Moldau) river contributes more water to the Elbe than the Elbe's own source.

An Evening of Heinz Erhardt with Andreas Neumann

Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 18:00
Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Andreas Neumann (Comedian)
Parodist Andreas Neumann is a master at bringing popular comedians, humourists and film stars of the economic miracle years back to life. The press describes him as »the best Heinz Erhardt since Heinz Erhardt« and even Grit Berthold, daughter of Heinz Erhardt, acknowledges, »When I heard Andreas Neumann, I thought my father was alive again.« In addition to Heinz Erhardt, Neumann parodies other personalities such as Heinz Rühmann, Theo Lingen and Marcel Reich-Ranicki. Neumann fans also get their money’s worth: because the programme always includes newly written texts. Extensive laughter is virtually guaranteed for everyone!

Symphoniker Hamburg / Boris Giltburg / Han-Na Chang

Thu, Jan 30, 2025, 19:30
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Symphoniker Hamburg, Boris Giltburg (Piano), Han-Na Chang (Conductor)
Mozart premiered his first minor-key piano concerto in Vienna on February 11, 1785. This concerto in D minor marks a departure from his usual pleasing style. Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony's scherzo reflects Stalin's terrifying image, while the Allegretto and finale assert the composer's presence through his musical initials (D-Es-C-H).

Johann König

Fri, Jan 31, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Johann König
Johann König was never really drawn to the stage. He wanted to be a teacher. A sports teacher for biology and general studies. But this plan didn’t work out. After 19 semesters at university, the audience, with their affection and money, forced him to devote himself entirely to humour. This led König straight onto the slippery slope of cultivated evening entertainment, from which there is no turning back. And today? Today he laughs about it – just as the audience laughs about him.

The Best of Hans Zimmer

Sun, Feb 2, 2025, 15:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Cinema Festival Symphonics, Stephen Ellery (Conductor)
Powerful. Beautiful. Breathtaking. This is how the music of two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer can be described. His most famous melodies, from the heroic power of »Gladiator« to the deeply moving harmonies of »The Lion King«, from the melancholy»Rain Man« to the nerve-wracking»Inception«, impressively demonstrate Zimmer’s gift for taking listeners straight to the heart of film stories. Zimmer’s sense of epic storytelling and his keen sense of the emotional depth of each scene have secured him a permanent place in the hearts of music lovers and filmgoers. His music is far more than a collection of beautiful melodies – it is a universal language that touches, inspires and connects. »The Best of Hans Zimmer in Concert« is a tribute to the masterful film composer, whose work is synonymous with emotion and goosebumps. The ensemble of soloists, choir and large orchestra of the Cinema Festival Symphonics masterfully interprets the world of unforgettable compositions that have been making cinemas tremble and hearts beat faster for years. From the imposing intensity of »Pirates of the Caribbean« to the futuristic soundscape of »Inception«, the large orchestra, soloists and choir offer an unmissable experience for fans of film music. Epic and dramatic, when the first notes of »The Dark Night« fill the room. Excitement and action flow through the hall when the powerful sounds of»Mission Impossible« captivate the audience. Every note that resonates through the concert hall immerses the guests in worlds of film music. The epic and dramatic compositions are enhanced by a breathtaking backdrop of synchronised screen animations and lighting effects.

Der Herr der Ringe & der Hobbit – The concert

Sun, Feb 2, 2025, 19:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Cinema Festival Symphonics, Stephen Ellery (Conductor)
Peter Jackson’s world-famous film celebrates its 20th anniversary! The music of the hobbits and orcs comes to the concert hall stage in an impressive concert experience with soloists, choir and orchestra. The menacing sounds of Mordor and the Black Riders, the beautiful lyrical melodies of the Elves – the renowned Cinema Festival Symphonics transform reality into a musical setting of Middle-earth. Howard Shore composed much of the music for the film trilogies »The Lord of the Rings« and »The Hobbit« and received the Oscar, Grammys and the Golden Globe for it. His motifs are elementally touching when the ring unfolds its power and corrupts the bearer of all power: a parable with great contemporary relevance. Accompanied by violins, trumpets and timpani, the ensemble, soloists and choir whisk the audience away to the Shire, through the landscape of Rohan and up to Mount Doom. The melodic tones of flutes and violins are supported by green landscapes and gloomy scenarios on the screen in the background. Animations specially developed for the production add an extra dimension to this symphonic event. »The last Goodbye« and »Far over the Misty Mountains cold« are performed by soloists with powerful voices who add a personal touch to the well-known songs. »The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit – The Concert« is a fantastic evening of a very special kind. Full of sound, full of atmosphere, unique! With state-of-the-art technology, the Cinema Festival Symphonics will take Middle-earth fans and fantasy lovers on a musical journey through all of The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit films. The impressive light and screen animations flow harmoniously with the legendary melodies and enhance the atmosphere of each individual song. The ensemble celebrates a unique sound that fully immerses the audience in the world of fantasy and provides many goosebump moments!

Cinema Festival Symphonics, Chor der Milano Festival Opera (Choir), Marc Breitfelders (Harmonica), Stephen Ellery (Conductor)

His compositions for the Italo-Western classic »Two Glorious Scoundrels«, Roland Joffé’s drama »Mission« and Giuseppe Tornatore’s film »Cinema Paradiso« became particularly well known. His fans can experience Morricone’s unforgettable works live in selected cities. Star guest Marc Breitfelder is one of the best harmonica players in the world. The large ensemble of soloists, orchestra and choir of the Milano Festival Opera will also be on stage to bring Morricone’s captivating music to life. The technically sophisticated screen animation with the original film scenes intensifies the gripping atmosphere and creates the famous goosebump effect that nobody can resist.

Gravitations: Verdi

Fri, Feb 7, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Haggai Cohen-Milo (Double bass), James Shipp (Synthesizer), James Shipp (Drums), Emma Rawicz (Saxophon), Tamuz Dekel (Guitar), Ziv Ravitz (Drums), Ziv Ravitz (Electronics), Philip Dizack (Trumpet), Stimulus (Spoken word art)
When Haggai Cohen-Milo describes his approach to creatively engaging with works of concert literature from the perspective of a jazz musician, it is flying objects in space that come to mind. When exploring the work, he feels like a spaceship that is drawn to the moon – the work – and thus accelerates further, finally overcoming the gravitational forces through targeted counter-steering, shooting past it and exploring new worlds: Worlds that lie beyond. Haggai Cohen-Milo, double bassist and composer, is a border crosser between genres and art forms, in demand worldwide and also a welcome guest at the Symphoniker Hamburg, most recently at the Martha Argerich Festival 2024. At the suggestion of the Symphoniker Hamburg, he has explored three heavyweights of the classical repertoire for the three-part concert series »Gravitations«. Cohen-Milo circles the work in conversation, study and improvisation, searches for the essential emotions and themes in it, uncovers them for himself and then creates something completely unique and new in sound and text with his artistic collaborators: three unique concerts between jazz, improvisation and spoken word art.

Teatime Classics

Sat, Feb 8, 2025, 16:00
Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Guido Sant’Anna (Violin), Martina Consonni (Piano)
Guido Sant’Anna »has charisma, stage presence and an astonishing maturity and depth in his playing,« wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung after the young Brazilian violinist had opened the Rheingau Music Festival in 2023 together with the hr-Sinfonieorchester. Be it large concert stages or prestigious competitions – at not even 20 years old, Guido Sant’Anna wins over audiences, the press and judges equally. With Martina Consonni, sponsored by star pianist Sir András Schiff, who celebrated her debut at the Elbphilharmonie in 2024, he presents a programme from Schubert to Ravel, which entertains both with breakneck virtuosity and expansive melody arcs – and even blues. Both Guido Sant’Anna and Martina Consonni study at the prestigious Kronberg Academy. Guido Sant’Anna was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2005. He achieved international recognition when he was the first South American violinist to win the prestigious International Fritz Kreisler Competition in 2022. A historic success had already preceded this triumph in Vienna in 2018 when he was the first Brazilian violinist to be invited to the International Yehudi Menuhin Competition in Geneva and won both the audience prize and the chamber music prize. In October 2022, he filled in for Christian Tetzlaff at the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in São Paulo for which he received rave reviews. Praised for her innate musicality and overwhelming sensitivity, combined with exceptional instrumental technique and brilliant sound, Martina Consonni has established herself as one of the most promising young pianists of her generation. Born in Como in 1997, she achieved two Masters degrees at the Pavia Conservatory and at the HMTM in Hanover. She also received a Masters degree in chamber music at the National Academy »Santa Cecilia« in Rome and an Artist Diploma at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin under Sir András Schiff. She has been selected to participate in several master classes where she encountered musicians of international standing, such as Daniel Barenboim, Kirill Gerstein, Steven Isserlis and Christoph Eschenbach.

Hamburger Camerata / Valentin Egel

Sat, Feb 8, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Hamburger Camerata, Tamar Inbar (Oboe), Reinhold Friedrich (Trumpet), Joanna Kamenarska (Violin), Valentin Egel (Director)
If there is a group of works that matches the Hamburger Camerata’s season’s motto »Camerata concertante« like pot and lid, it is the »Brandenburgischen Konzerte« by Johann Sebastian Bach! The six »Concerts avec plusieurs instruments«, which the Köthener Hofkapellmeister wrote in 1721 as his artistic calling card for Margrave Christian Ludwig von Brandenburg, are a real playground for concerting soloists and ensembles in all conceivable constellations. On the 275th anniversary of Bach’s death, which is celebrated by the Musikwelt on 28 July 2025, the Hamburger Camerata, with soloists from its own ranks as well as musical friends finally dedicated themselves to the entire »Six Pack« in one evening with soloists from its own ranks and musical friends.

Klassische Philharmonie Bonn, Aleksey Shadrin (Cello), Vladimir Fanshil (Conductor)
»Auf nach Paris!« (Off to Paris!) is the motto of the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn’s concert in February. This time, the orchestra looks to neighbouring France and has designed the programme with this in mind: it starts with Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 with the beautiful nickname »La Poule« (The Chicken). The work was composed in 1785 for the concert series »Le Concert de la Loge Olympique« and confirmed Haydn’s fame in France.

Verdi: Messa da Requiem / Sylvain Cambreling

Sun, Feb 9, 2025, 19:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Symphoniker Hamburg, EuropaChorAkademie, Mandy Fredrich (Soprano), Marina Prudenskaya (Alto), Dmytro Popov (Tenor), Bogdan Taloș (Bass), Joonas Ahonen (Piano), Sylvain Cambreling (Conductor)
»Grief and prayer, fear and hopeful confidence, they speak a more passionate and individual language here than we are used to hearing in church«, wrote the music critic Eduard Hanslick about Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in 1875. In fact, there is so much drama in the work that the Catholic Church initially protested against performances – it was far too secular. Together with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the opulent work will be sung by the EuropaChorAkademie, a talent factory for the best young singers from all over Europe.

Igor Levit / Piano Recital

Mon, Feb 10, 2025, 19:30
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Igor Levit (Piano)
When listening to Igor Levit play Beethoven, you feel that you are being taken by the hand, that you are being led in a determined and yet extremely friendly manner on an exploration of a densely built-up terrain. An unexpected attraction captivates at every bend in the road, everything is there in its intimacy, grandeur, in its deep, ethical seriousness. And yet it seems close, accessible, completely present. This also applies when Levit takes on a work that was not actually intended for piano, such as Beethoven’s expansive »Eroica« Symphony: Beethoven is as direct, spontaneous and physical as life itself. But also as existential and uncomfortable as the things that determine our happiness and our worries. Igor Levit achieves that magical balance between the telling details and the meaningfulness of the big picture that characterises the classic Beethoven.

The great Verdi Gala

Tue, Feb 11, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Chor der Milano Festival Opera, Orchester der Milano Festival Opera (Orchestra), Cristian Lanza (Tenor), Giulio Boschetti (Bariton), Silvia Rampazzo (Soprano), Monika Piechaczek (Soprano), Maja Wielgus (Mezzo-Soprano), Marcin Wolniewski (Conductor)
»Every music has its heaven«, Verdi once said. His music was created under the clear skies of »Bella Italia«. Verdi’s music arouses strong emotions, but always remains genuine and true – and beautiful, as beautiful as the sky over Italy. There is a »very special« hit in many of Verdi’s operas. The world-famous »Prisoners’ Chorus« from Nabucco or »Preghiera di Desdemona« (Ave Maria) or »Ella giammai m’amò«. They are among the most moving pieces that European music has ever produced. NABUCCO, LA TRAVIATA, RIGOLETTO, IL TROVATORE and AIDA are masterpieces from the first to the last bar. With his soft, full timbre, Italy’s star tenor Cristian Lanza, Silvia Rampazzo and baritone Giulio Boschetti as well as the choir and orchestra of the Milano Festival Opera present the very best of Verdi’s magnificent arias, duets and choruses. With great talent and even more feeling, Cristian Lanza knows how to give his voice wings. The Italian tenor, born in Rome, has been one of the greats of the scene for some time now. His grandfather continues to be a source of inspiration for him. Born in Italy, he is the grandson of the world-famous singer Mario Lanza. But he has long since ventured out of his grandfather’s slipstream. Cristian Lanza’s lyric tenor has a softer and fuller timbre than that of his grandfather. He not only has the high notes that are expected in tenor arias, but also enchants and touches his listeners with his soulful voice.

Whether they appear at the Queen’s private birthday party in Windsor Castle, at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, in Carnegie Hall or at the Sydney Opera House – it is the declared mission of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain to fight the serious side of life with all their might.
