Thu, Apr 17, 2025, 19:00
Gewandhausorchester (Orchestra), Thomanerchor Leipzig (Choir), Andreas Reize (Conductor), Francesca Aspromonte (Soprano), Valerie Eickhoff (Alt), Mauro Peter (Tenor), Florian Sievers (Tenor), Jonas Müller (Bass), Manuel Walser (Bass)
Lightning and thunder crash around us, voices clamor from all sides. We're bombarded with questions and complaints. In Bach's St. Matthew Passion, two choruses and orchestras cry out "Crucify him!" from the galleries of St. Thomas Church, immersing us in the scene. Amidst the mockery, individual compassion shines, a heart-wrenching duality of love and pain. The Passion gives voice to human suffering. Where the world is out of joint, where old church values crumble before cardinal sins and the pursuit of capital, where struggles for world explanations and divine favor fuel wars, Bach's counterpoint makes dissenting voices heard, offering solace and reconciliation.

DER FREISCHÜTZ

Sun, Apr 20, 2025, 17:00
Gewandhausorchester (Orchestra), Yura Yang (Conductor), Christian von Götz (Inszenierung)
Weber's 1817 opera "Der Freischütz" tells the story of Max, a hunter whose future depends on a shooting trial. Overwhelmed by pressure, he considers a pact with the devil, a path already taken by Kaspar. Max's fiancée, Agathe, shares his anxieties about fate. Weber's music captures the anxieties of a generation, making "Der Freischütz" a landmark work of German Romantic opera.

DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE

Fri, Apr 25, 2025, 19:30
Gewandhausorchester (Orchestra), Yura Yang (Conductor), Matthias Davids (Inszenierung)

Brahms' Third Symphony, premiered in 1884, is his shortest and focuses on depth. Hans von Bülow liked it so much he played it twice in one concert. Its premiere shook Queen's Hall, and a year later, Arthur Nikisch led another impactful performance at the Gewandhaus.
