Johannes Kalitzke & Ilya Gringolts

Fri, Oct 28, 2022, 20:00
Johannes Kalitzke (Conductor), Ilya Gringolts (Violin), Bavarian Radio Chorus, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
As can only be expected, Nicolaus Richter de Vroe is fully au fait with the violin. After all, this Halle-born composer is a trained violinist and played in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for more than 30 years. He wrote his new violin concerto for Ilya Gringolts, a violinist celebrated in the concert hall for his uncompromising and expressive style. No less uncompromising and expressive is Iannis Xenakis’s Jalons (Milestones), a work frequently reminiscent of electro-acoustic music that was written to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Pierre Boulez’s Ensemble Intercontemporain. After the interval we will be treated to Mit o ptici (The Myth of the Birds) by the Serbian composer Milica Djordjević. This large-scale work for chorus and orchestra is a setting of the eponymous ballad by Miroslav Antić, a poet born in what was then Yugoslavia. “This wonderful poem has haunted me for 20 years”, the composer explains. “It tells a very multi-layered, forthright and truly courageous story that reverberates strongly within me.”

musica viva: Johannes Kalitzke

Fri, Nov 10, 2023, 20:00
Marco Blaauw (Trumpet), Dirk Rothbrust (Percussion), Maria Stange (Harp), Axel Porath (Viola), Johannes Schottke (Sound design), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Johannes Kalitzke (Conductor)
The Swedish composer Lisa Streich, winner of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, has an avowed “interest in the beauty of the imperfect.” Her Jubelhemd, which blends together diverse sonic layers, is named after the work of the same name by Austrian artist Markus Schinwald: a shirt that, with its arms stretched upwards, can only be worn in a gesture of jubilation. After this “Concerto Grosso,” Johannes Kalitzke appears in a double role as conductor and composer in the premiere of his Zeitkapsel, a dance of death for large orchestra, commissioned by musica viva. The concert will conclude with Luc Ferrari’s Histoire du plaisir et de la désolation, a sonic search for “new sensuality” which brilliantly fails in the final Ronde de la désolation with the “rupture of all logic” (Ferrari).

Amaryllis Quartett / Lena Eckels

Sat, Nov 23, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Gustav Frielinghaus (Violin), Lena Sandoz (Violin), Yves Sandoz (Cello), Mareike Hefti (Viola), Lena Eckels (Viola)
The Amaryllis Quartet celebrates its 20th anniversary and in its programme concept refers to Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most important string quartet composers. At the same time, the new series of CD releases with works by Beethoven and classical modernism will be presented. What has been particularly important for the quartet in 20 years? Contemporary music. For this reason, the first performance of a commissioned composition is planned again. The programme will conclude with Johannes Brahms’ late work, the String Quintet in G major with two violas. A jubilant and exuberant work that seems detached from all earthly complaints. Lena Eckels, who was a member of the Amaryllis Quartet for ten years, will be playing the second viola again as a guest. There couldn’t be a more fitting line-up for the anniversary.

Arditti Quartet Marathon

Sat, May 11, 2024, 17:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Irvine Arditti (Violin), Ashot Sarkissjan (Violin), Ralf Ehlers (Viola), Lucas Fels (Cello)
The Arditti Quartet is the leading string quartet of the modern age. Its musicians have premiered more than 1,000 works since 1974 and collaborated with a number of legendary 20th- and 21st-century composers, including György Ligeti, Sofia Gubaidulina, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis and Pierre Boulez. In 2017, they were given the honour of being the first string quartet to perform in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall. The Arditti Quartet now returns to that concert hall to celebrate its 50th anniversary. In two 70-minute segments, the four musicians pack in the most exciting pieces the contemporary music scene has to offer: from the video-animated sounds of Olga Neuwirth and Elliott Carter’s challenging String Quartet No. 3 to the timbral experimentations of Rebecca Saunders, to whom the Elbphilharmonie is dedicating an extensive spotlight this season. In conversation, the musicians also share rare insights into their work and look back at an eventful half a century. A defining moment of contemporary music.

Leon Gurvitch: Bachomania

Sat, Apr 26, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Leon Gurvitch (Piano)
Classical music meets the art of improvisation: in his solo piano programme »Bachomania«, internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Leon Gurvitch brings the music of Johann Sebastian Bach to life in a completely new and exciting way. To mark the 340th anniversary of the great master’s birth, Gurvitch not only celebrates his timeless works, but also invites the audience to experience Bach through the lens of modern interpretation. With respect and imagination, he adapts compositions that were not originally intended for piano – including excerpts from the famous cello suites and chorales such as »Jesus bleibet meine Freude«. These works are revitalised by Gurvitch’s own handwriting and enhanced by spontaneous improvisations that make each concert unique.
