With the help of our luxurious ”backing band”, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, it’s time for you to participate and sing along in well-known music pieces. We dare to promise you a powerful experience.The sing-along is led by Emilie Power, organist and choir leader of the Katarina parish. Lyrics will be handed out ahead of the concert.Strollers and prams cannot be brought into Konserthuset Stockholm and are best left at home. A designated stroller tent is set up outside the entrance, where prams can be left, subject to space availability.

In the entertaining Epiphany Concert, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by the British conductor John Wilson. He is an authority on film music and has reconstructed and arranged many classic soundtracks for concert settings. Since 1994, Wilson leads his own hand-picked orchestra, specializing in film and musicals, and performs annually at The Proms summer festival.The Twelfth Night Concert 2023 was a resounding success when British conductor John Wilson led the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in a program blending seductive film music with the best from the world of musicals. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we welcome him back in a programme featuring irresistible musical hits by the very best in the genre – Bernstein, Sondheim, Gershwin, and Rodgers & Hammerstein, among others.On vocals: the British actor and musical star Julian Ovenden. He has appeared in television series in both England and the USA and participated in numerous famous musical productions on Broadway in New York and in the West End in London. That's far from the case. In fact, the Christmas Oratorio consists of six different parts, intended to be performed at as many occasions around Christmas. Today, as in this concert, it's customary to perform the first three parts, which were first performed together at a concert in Leipzig, in the days around Christmas 1735.Delving into Bach's music is to venture into an unfathomable and fascinating musical universe. We constantly discover new things, and it never ends. Spend a few hours with Bach's Christmas Oratorio. The music that Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951) composed in the early 20th century was certainly not met with open arms and curiosity. On the contrary, it was often met with outright hostility.In the Five Orchestral Pieces, Op. 16 from 1909 (the version for smaller ensemble is from 1920), he truly pushed the boundaries of traditional harmony and rhythm, with fragmented phrases and distinctive colourings. What his contemporaries, often hostile, perhaps failed to recognize was that he was building upon and expanding the late Romantic tradition – traces of which become evident once the dust has settled.At this time, before the First World War, he was a student in Vienna of the composer and conductor Alexander von Zemlinsky. Later, Schoenberg and his own students –including Anton Webern and Alban Berg – would form the radical movement known as the "Second Viennese School" (the first being made up of the likes of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven).From the same year, 1909, we find Erwartung – a "monodrama" for soprano and chamber orchestra. He composed this incredibly intense, expressionistic music in just a few weeks, but it took fifteen years (!) before the work had its premiere in Prague in 1924, with his old teacher Zemlinsky conducting. In the dreamlike text, an anxious woman wanders through the forest, desperately searching for her lover.Schoenberg said: ”In Erwartung the aim is to represent in slow motion everything that occurs during a single second of maximum spiritual excitement, stretching it out to half an hour”.The vocal soloist is Elisabeth Meyer, who has performed in numerous roles at the Royal Swedish Opera and Folkoperan, among others. The concert is presented by Axel Englund, Professor of Literature, who has researched the relationship between words and music.***In collaboration with the Royal College of Music, Stockholm University and Forum Modernism, with support from the Swedish Arts Council and Stockholm City.

Welcome to this concert, at which 24 singers cross borders to share their Christmas traditions and unite them with our own in a unique holiday programme. Lucia and company are also in attendance!At this concert, Cantemus sings Ukrainian Christmas music together with Homin – in Ukrainian. Homin sings Swedish Christmas music together with Cantemus – in Swedish. Cantemus and Homin then sing music from their respective Christmas traditions.Lucia, together with her handmaidens and star boys, pays us a visit from a music school in Stockholm. Saint Nicholas, considered a national saint in Ukraine, may also drop by to sing with Homin.If you’ve seen the series Chernobyl, then you have heard Homin! The choir sings the Ukrainian song “Vichnaya Pamyat” on the show’s soundtrack. Founded in 1988 in Lviv, Homin has been considered Lviv’s municipal choir since 2003, with a mission to safeguard and develop the Ukrainian singing tradition. Homin has gained popularity not only at home in Ukraine, but also internationally. Since the war broke out, the choir has intensified its efforts to spread Ukrainian choral music both at home and abroad.Cantemus, an “academy of choral singing”, was formed in 1999 by Sofia and Göran Staxäng. For over 25 years, they have gathered over 7,000 choral singers of all ages and of various levels of experience. Their repertoire spans from Queen to Handel’s Messiah. Cantemus has performed at Konserthuset on several occasions together with world-class Swedish and international performers and professional music ensembles.

She is the soloist of the year at the Nobel Prize Concert.Court Singer Malin Byström is one of the most sought-after sopranos of our time, having been named Female Singer of the Year at the International Opera Awards, among other honours. With the rich palette of her lyric-dramatic voice and a radiant stage presence, she has captivated and charmed audiences worldwide. ”I am very much looking forward to this extraordinary concert”, says Malin Byström. ”To be part of Nobel Week, when the eyes of the world are on Sweden, makes me both incredibly proud and deeply humbled. I will sing with all my heart.”Malin Byström made her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006, performing music by Richard Strauss. Lied concert with Johanna Wallroth

The Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth has a flourishing international opera career and has performed several roles at the Vienna State Opera. She had her breakthrough in 2019 when she won the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition. Wallroth has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions, and she also made a guest appearance at a romantic concert in 2020.This time, we begin by hearing her perform songs by Clara and Robert Schumann. After the intermission, we are treated to an exciting new discovery: songs by the French mezzo-soprano, pianist, and composer Pauline Viardot (1821–1910). Viardot was extraordinarily multi-talented; alongside her operatic career, she took piano lessons from a young Franz Liszt and frequently played four-hand piano pieces with her dear friend Frédéric Chopin. Additionally, we hear songs by the Swedish composers Gunnar de Frumerie and Tebogo Monnakgotla. Monnakgotla has set Edith Södergran’s Dagen svalnar to music (world premiere). Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. In addition to concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the US. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

The Count Basie Orchestra

The Count Basie Orchestra is one of jazz’s most iconic big bands and has continued to perform around the world, even 40 years after its founder, William “Count” Basie, passed away. Count Basie was born in 1904 and began his career as a pianist and organist. He soon started exploring his love for the blues and joined Benny Moten's orchestra before forming his own band in 1935 – The Count Basie Orchestra.This big band has been one of the foremost representatives of Kansas City swing and contributed significantly to the big band era. Basie encouraged his musicians to compose and arrange music, which contributed to the unique sound and enduring success. Among the jazz greats who worked with Basie are Lester Young, Billie Holiday, and Joe Williams.Since Basie's death in 1984, The Count Basie Orchestra has continued to perform under the leadership of Scotty Barnhart, with some members originally hired by Basie himself. The Count Basie Orchestra has been awarded 18 Grammy Awards and has performed for royalty as well as in numerous films and TV shows. The latest album, Basie Swings the Blues, won a Grammy in 2024. The Count Basie Orchestra remains a living symbol of jazz history.It is now exactly 20 years since The Count Basie Orchestra last visited Konserthuset Stockholm (November 2004).

Join us for a Motown-themed concert performed by the Swedish Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards. The title is “Souled Out” and soul is exactly what’s on offer, with the music of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Michael Jackson and Chaka Kahn!The soloist is Kristin Amparo, who has garnered recognition for her unstoppable and seemingly unlimited artistry over the years. She has been described as a combination of Ella Fitzgerald and Amy Winehouse. She participated twice in 2014 in the Swedish show Allsång på Skansen (Sing-along at Skansen). She was also in the 2015 Melodifestivalen song competition with the song “I See You”, written by Fredrik Kempe and David Kreuger. Bass singers are less common in the world lied singing, but an exception is the Austrian Günther Groissböck, who opens this season's popular lied concert series. Today, he is one of the leading basses in the opera world and a sought-after guest at all the major opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival. He has particularly excelled in operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.Concurrently, lied singing has always been a great passion. The album Nicht Wiedersehen! from 2022 includes songs by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Hans Rott. Mahler returns here in his programme, alongside songs by Schubert, Strauss, and Carl Loewe.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. At last, Stockholms Musikgymnasium gets to present the wonderful annual Autumn Concert! This substantial programme is performed by 300 young vocalists, led by Maria Goundorina, Elias Aaron Johansson and Sofia Ågren. The guest ensembles are Classes 9C and 9D from Adolf Fredrik’s Music School, Norrmalm, led by Natalia Edvall.Stockholms Musikgymnasium was founded in 1959 as a natural continuation of Adolf Fredrik’s Music School, and has been housed since 1984 in Kungsholmens Gymnasium’s historic building near Fridhemsplan. The school’s choirs have an outstanding national and international reputation and collaborate regularly with a range of different institutions, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Stockholm Concert Orchestra, Swedish Wind Ensemble and more. The choirs regularly perform in various churches and concert halls, such as Berwaldhallen and Eric Ericsonhallen, and present a popular and well-attended Saint Lucia Day concert in the Blue Hall at Stockholm City Hall.

Singer, composer, and visual artist – the versatile Cécile McLorin Salvant has carved out her own niche that expands jazz beyond its conventional boundaries: in addition to jazz, she touches upon vaudeville, blues, folk, and baroque music.It's an original and irresistible mix where the common denominator is the theatrical and powerful storytelling through text and music. She has been awarded numerous prizes and won several Grammy Awards. Her latest album was Mélusine (2023), where the Florida-born artist predominantly sings in French. Another example of her creativity is Ogresse – a 90-minute song cycle with her own lyrics, which she first performed in 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.Cécile McLorin Salvant has appeared at Konserthuset Stockholm several times since her debut in 2017. Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B minor is one of the truly great masterpieces in music history. Compiled from music he had composed for various occasions over a period of 25 years. Here we find both the magnificent Sanctus, which he composed for Christmas in 1724 when he was new to the job as cantor in Leipzig, and the Osanna written in 1749 by an elderly, almost blind Bach. The Mass in B minor is something of a culmination of Bach's fantastic work.We hear the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir together with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fredrik Malmberg. Soloists include soprano Anna Zander, who has a special focus on early music, and Kathrin Lorenzen, who won the prestigious Soloist Prize earlier this year.The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir was founded in 1945 by the then 27-year-old Eric Ericson and has since then held a central place in Swedish and international music life. The choir belongs to the absolute top tier of professional ensembles internationally, and since 2003, Eric Ericson's Chamber Choir has had a close collaboration with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concert Hall.Please note: The concert includes an intermission.

Welcome to a star-studded and poignant tribute to Georg Riedel, one of the greatest musicians and composers of Swedish jazz. Radiojazzgruppen’s Nisse Landgren hosts the evening and pianist Calle Bagge conducts a house band featuring elite members of the Swedish jazz scene, as well as vocalists including Nicolai Dunger and Sarah Riedel.With the passing on 25 February this year of jazz bassist, composer and arranger Georg Riedel at 90 years of age, one of the most versatile composers of Swedish music fell silent.Georg Riedel composed music for Astrid Lindgren’s films, as well as innovative jazz for Radiojazzgruppen and his own duos, trios and quartets. His oeuvre includes opera, orchestral works and music for films, ballet and church services. He is among the musicians who brought Swedish folk music to jazz stages. Jazz på Svenska (“Jazz in Swedish”), his album with Jan Johansson, is the most sold Swedish jazz album.To celebrate this doyen of jazz, Stockholm Jazz Festival presents a full evening at Stockholm Konserthuset, in which a wide selection of Riedel’s compositions will be performed by carefully selected artists – many of whom worked with the man himself over the past 20 years. In this concert, Orkestern Filialen and friends celebrate the big city. The music portrays metropolitan places and their many contradictions, because indeed, cities have it all: noise and traffic, but also parks and quiet streets. Above all, they have people. The repertoire reflects these contrasts and diversity with a captivating mix of works all linked by one common factor: romance.We embark on a journey through space and time, from a dystopian sci-fi depiction from 1927 of an imagined Manhattan in 2026, via Rome’s magnificent umbrella pine trees, to a couple in the midst of war-torn Warsaw. We follow Konserthuset’s statue of Orpheus on an adventure in Stockholm, and also visit New York and Paris before finally landing on the streets of London. In Monday at Last, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen invite guest artists to perform both newer and older music. This time, the internationally acclaimed Swedish soprano Kerstin Avemo is the Monday guest.Avemo has, among other things, received awards from Svenska Dagbladet and the Opera Magazine. She has performed on many of the world's great stages. A while back, she played all the female roles in The Tales of Hoffmann at the Gothenburg Opera, and on the same stage, she performed the only role in Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire – a production for which she also contributed the idea, concept, and direction.Here, Avemo performs songs by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, which are brought into our time through Aribert Reimann's more modern adaptation. Schönberg wrote his passionate second string quartet during a marital crisis when his wife Mathilde temporarily left him for a young painter, Richard Gerstl. A soprano enters in the last two movements, and in the second movement, Schönberg quotes something that can be called a Viennese street song: Ach, du lieber Augustin. Mendelssohn and Schönberg frame Dvorák's idyllic Terzetto for two violins and viola.
