The highly acclaimed English mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly has held the title of Dame Sarah since 2017. Her opera career has been long and successful, spanning from the Baroque to contemporary repertoire. Among the many celebrated productions she has been involved in are Mozart's Titus at the English National Opera, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at La Scala in Milan, and Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.Alongside her opera career worldwide, art song has always been a central part of her artistry. Here we hear her in songs that truly showcase her versatility, by composers including Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler, Barber, Eisler, and Britten.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of the lied concert series. Alongside concert activities in the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the USA. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music on the re-publishing of older Swedish music.

The young German-Romanian baritone Konstantin Krimmel won several competitions early in his career and is now part of the ensemble at the Bayerische Staatsoper. From 2021 to 2023, he was a BBC New Generation Artist.Lied singing is an important part of his artistry, and he has recorded songs by composers such as Schubert and Silvestrov on a couple of CDs with pianist Hélène Grimaud. For his debut at Konserthuset, he performs songs by Brahms, Vaughan Williams, and Schubert.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. In addition to concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the US. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

The Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth has a flourishing international opera career and has performed several roles at the Vienna State Opera. She had her breakthrough in 2019 when she won the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition. Wallroth has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions, and she also made a guest appearance at a romantic concert in 2020.This time, we begin by hearing her perform songs by Clara and Robert Schumann. After the intermission, we are treated to an exciting new discovery: songs by the French mezzo-soprano, pianist, and composer Pauline Viardot (1821–1910). Viardot was extraordinarily multi-talented; alongside her operatic career, she took piano lessons from a young Franz Liszt and frequently played four-hand piano pieces with her dear friend Frédéric Chopin. Additionally, we hear songs by the Swedish composers Gunnar de Frumerie and Tebogo Monnakgotla. Monnakgotla has set Edith Södergran’s Dagen svalnar to music (world premiere). Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. In addition to concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the US. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

Helena Munktell’s romantic Suite for large orchestra is a piece that the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has never before performed in its entirety. The music was composed in 1895, and like the now often performed Bränningar, this suite was premiered in Monte Carlo in the late 19th century.Next, we hear the young Swedish soprano Jessica Elevant tackle Wagner's Wesendonck Songs – music filled with burning longing and celestial beauty. Jessica Elevant has recently gained attention for her participation in Daniel Nelson's opera Pride and Prejudice at the Norrlandsoperan. This marks her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Another debutant is Sergej Bolkhovets – as a conductor, that is. He has previously been a violin soloist with the orchestra. He leads the orchestra in Shostakovich's first symphony. Already in this symphony, Shostakovich demonstrates his phenomenal ability to handle the orchestra. It's personal music with humorous twists and great finesse. A remarkable symphonic debut by a 19-year-old composer.

At the season's final lied concert, two singers perform: soprano Miah Persson and baritone Arvid Eriksson. The program combines classical German lieder with Swedish songs.Miah Persson is a renowned performer at the world's leading opera houses and is also very active in concert settings. She has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions and has also presented several romance concerts before, most recently in 2021 featuring songs by Stenhammar.The young Swedish baritone Arvid Eriksson has had mentors such as Anne Sofie von Otter and Peter Mattei. Among well-known song cycles he has performed are Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe and Mahler's Rückert-Lieder, but closest to his heart is Swedish songs and composers like Stenhammar, Rangström, and Peterson-Berger.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. She is the soloist of the year at the Nobel Prize Concert.Court Singer Malin Byström is one of the most sought-after sopranos of our time, having been named Female Singer of the Year at the International Opera Awards, among other honours. With the rich palette of her lyric-dramatic voice and a radiant stage presence, she has captivated and charmed audiences worldwide. ”I am very much looking forward to this extraordinary concert”, says Malin Byström. ”To be part of Nobel Week, when the eyes of the world are on Sweden, makes me both incredibly proud and deeply humbled. I will sing with all my heart.”Malin Byström made her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006, performing music by Richard Strauss.
