In Monday at Last, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen invite guest artists to perform both newer and older music. The guests this time are Swedish pianist Peter Friis Johansson and South African violist, composer, and overtone singer Gareth Lubbe.We get to hear the incredible possibilities and resources of the voice in Lubbe's Miniatures, where he uses a special singing technique to create a whole range of resonant overtones. It's a completely unique sound world that conveys the feeling of something magical and primal.British-American composer Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) was a highly skilled violist and a pioneer among female composers. Her Morpheus for viola and piano was first performed in 1918 at Carnegie Hall and was her first major success. After Schnittke's both wild and contemplative string trio, and Mozart's lively Duo, "Finally Monday" concludes with the rarely performed ecstatically charged piano quartet by Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä in a late romantic style.

In Monday at Last, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen invite guest artists to perform both newer and older music. This time, the guests are Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen and violist Vicki Powell, the leader of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's viola section.In addition to his career as a pianist, Mustonen is also a conductor and composer, and here he plays the piano part in his own sonatas for violin and cello. We also hear music by a very intriguing figure, Marcelle de Manziarly (1899–1989). She left her homeland of Ukraine to study in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, but later moved to the USA where she worked as both a pianist, conductor, and composer.To conclude this Monday evening, we hear Saint-Saëns's Piano Quartet No. 2 in B-flat major – a work that has been called a neglected masterpiece, but which now belongs to the central repertoire for piano quartet.

In Monday at Last, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen invite artists to perform both newer and older music. But this Monday, it's not guest musicians who take over the stage of the Grünewald Hall – it's dancers!Nadja Sellrup is a principal dancer with the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm, while Oscar Salomonsson has previously held a similar position. Both have performed in a range of acclaimed and widely discussed productions at the Royal Swedish Opera. They have also enjoyed distinguished international careers.Now we get to experience them in Connection–Band–Saraband with choreography by Pär Isberg, inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film Saraband, which focuses on relationships. The music comes from Bach's cello suites, which were important to Bergman.This exciting Monday at Last concert also features music by Sibelius, Lera Auerbach, and Erwin Schulhoff, as well as Jonas S Bohlin's To Cecilia for solo violin and choreography, written in 2023 for the Katrina Festival in Åland, where Cecilia Zilliacus is the artistic director.

Sir Simon Rattle and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Mozart’s Last Symphonies

Mozart’s final three symphonies reveal the composer at the absolute height of his powers, while invoking in listeners the most diverse moods and emotions. Symphony No. 39 encompasses both tension and splendour, No. 40 is full of mystery and drama, while the “Jupiter” echoes with both solemnity and triumph. Simon Rattle and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra share a special affinity for these works, which they approach with verve, transparency and a rich sense of tonal variety.

When Stefano Bollani interprets the hit song “O sole mio”, all languor and indulgence disappears. Instead, you hear light-footed, astonishing imagination. Now the pianist, who is at home in both jazz and classical music, celebrates the music of his homeland for an entire Italian night. There will be well-known melodies, virtuosic improvisation, and imaginative arrangements with plenty of humour. Stefano Bollani is joined by clarinettist Gabriele Mirabassi, guitarist Matteo Mancuso, trumpeter Luca Aquino and singer Valentina Cenni.

Swedish Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards with Kristin Amparo

Join us for a Motown-themed concert performed by the Swedish Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards. The title is “Souled Out” and soul is exactly what’s on offer, with the music of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Michael Jackson and Chaka Kahn!The soloist is Kristin Amparo, who has garnered recognition for her unstoppable and seemingly unlimited artistry over the years. She has been described as a combination of Ella Fitzgerald and Amy Winehouse. She participated twice in 2014 in the Swedish show Allsång på Skansen (Sing-along at Skansen). She was also in the 2015 Melodifestivalen song competition with the song “I See You”, written by Fredrik Kempe and David Kreuger. In addition, Kristin was a driving force behind hip hop collective Femtastic.The Swedish Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards is joined by a backup band consisting of a guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboard player and two backup singers.This annual concert is arranged in partnership between the Föreningen för den Beridna Högvakten (Association of the Mounted High Guard) and the Swedish Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards, which is one of the Swedish Armed Forces’ three professional orchestras and consists of 27 brass players and three percussionists.

Mahler Festival: Mahler songs with Julius Drake, Catriona Morison and James Newby

This first Recital Hall concert of the Mahler Festival focuses on Mahler's most beautiful songs. Today's most important Lieder accompanist, pianist Julius Drake, flanks vocalists he admires. Scottish mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison is praised for her refined yet full voice. 'A real star,' according to the Times. You will also hear baritone James Newby, winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award. He recently released the acclaimed album Fallen to Dust.Julius Drake chose a series of songs full of drama and poetry for Morison and Newby. That poetry sometimes comes from Mahler himself, as today in Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. 'When my dearest marries' is the name of one of the songs. The lady in question did not marry Mahler, who experienced this as a 'glowing knife' in his heart. He processed all his frustration and sorrow in this stirring song cycle. In the five lyrical Rückert-Lieder, he shows a happier side.
