Sona Jobarteh is the first professional female kora player to have conquered a previously male domain. She comes from a family of Gambian musicians with a long tradition of playing the kora, a 21-stringed West African bridge harp. Until now, women were only allowed to sing to the sounds of the kora – Sona Jobarteh combines both in her meditative music-making. Born and raised in London, she studied both classical music and traditional African music. Sona Jobarteh shows us how well tradition and innovation can complement one another.

Strong and yet vulnerable – on the international music scene, Souad Massi's voice is unmistakable. The Algerian began her career as a member of a heavy metal band, later establishing herself as a singer-songwriter in her exile home of Paris. In her songs, Souad Massis mixes elements of French chanson and Algerian music with folk rock and country music. Her music addresses existential themes such as freedom, justice and female self-determination. In her programme Sequana, she sings about the fragility of nature.

Singer, composer, and visual artist – the versatile Cécile McLorin Salvant has carved out her own niche that expands jazz beyond its conventional boundaries: in addition to jazz, she touches upon vaudeville, blues, folk, and baroque music.It's an original and irresistible mix where the common denominator is the theatrical and powerful storytelling through text and music. She has been awarded numerous prizes and won several Grammy Awards. Her latest album was Mélusine (2023), where the Florida-born artist predominantly sings in French. Another example of her creativity is Ogresse – a 90-minute song cycle with her own lyrics, which she first performed in 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.Cécile McLorin Salvant has appeared at Konserthuset Stockholm several times since her debut in 2017. With her, she this time brings an experienced trio featuring pianist Sullivan Fortner, who also contributed to Salvant's Grammy-winning album The Window, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, known for his exquisite yet swinging bass playing, and on drums, Kyle Poole, who has made a splash on New York's jazz scene in recent years.In cooperation with Stockholm Jazz Festival.

This spring’s Blue House Jazz series concludes with familiar faces for the Konserthuset audience: Dee Dee Bridgewater joins the Blue House Jazz Orchestra, led by Peter Asplund and Magnus Lindgren!It has been 20 years since the Konserthuset’s own big band was founded, and with this spring’s final concert, Asplund and Lindgren bid farewell as its artistic leaders, passing the baton to the next generation. This grand finale is a celebration at the highest level – not least since it features Dee Dee Bridgewater, the legendary vocalist and jazz diva who never fails to captivate her audience.Dee Dee Bridgewater’s life and career are marked by both strong integrity and artistic curiosity. A three-time Grammy Award winner, she has performed at Konserthuset three times before, most recently in 2016. This, however, will be her first appearance with the Blue House Jazz Orchestra.

This band has more than half a century of history if we don't count the break of a dozen years arranged by Janusz Grzywacz and Marek Stryszowski at the turn of the century. They debuted in 1971 at Gitariada '71, a festival they organised in Nowa Huta, Krakow, which introduced fusion and jazz-rock elements to the Polish scene. Over the years, they have developed their style, which has been compared to that of the American group Weather Report, consisting, especially in the early period, of experimenting with instrumentation and combining different types of sound. Laborka ("Lab"), as they are colloquially called, is undoubtedly a showpiece of jazz Krakow and, simultaneously, a top spot on the list of Polish bands of all time. Inspired by poems from Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Tunisia, Egypt, and Belgium, RU’YA creates a musical world of unity, joy, and shared humanity.
