Or the evening as the highlight of the day? To this end, he draws on exquisite gems from the history of pop music, melancholic and humorous gems from 1910 to 1965 – and he does it differently to everyone else. It is not for nothing that the singer and pianist Götz Alsmann is regarded as the »King of German jazz schlager«.
After the latest studio album entitled »L.I.E.B.E.« with a tour of the same name and the musical excursions »In Paris« (2011), »On Broadway« (2014) and »In Rome« (2017), the king of the jazz hits Götz Alsmann is back at the Laeiszhalle with a new programme in 2024. The band that assists Götz Alsmann at the concerts consists of musicians, most of whom have been part of the ensemble for decades. At literally thousands of concerts, they have participated in Alsmann’s everlasting commitment to the jazz hit. Their place in music history is assured.

»Mal laut, mal leise, innovativ, der Tradition verpflichtet« – so lautet das Motto des JugendJazzOrchesters Nordrhein-Westfalen (JJO NRW). Seit dem Gründungsjahr 1975 hat es sich damit zum Vorbild für viele weitere Landesjugendjazzorchester entwickelt. Jetzt feiert die Bigband ihren 50. Geburtstag. Und zur prominent besetzten Party wurden Moderator und Jazz-Allrounder Götz Alsmann, der schwedische Posaunist Nils Landgren sowie der Sänger Max Mutzke eingeladen.Für den auch internationalen Erfolg des JJO NRW (so bespielte man vielfach alle fünf Kontinente) sind von Beginn an die wechselnden Mitglieder des künstlerischen Leitungsteams verantwortlich. Mit eigenen Arrangements und Kompositionen speziell für das JJO NRW fördern sie nachhaltig die künstlerische Entwicklung der jungen Jazzmusikerinnen und -musiker. Schließlich haben viele der Spitzenkräfte, die heute auch in der WDR Big Band Köln spielen, beim JJO NRW angefangen.

Berühmte Beispiele der Opernwelt sind Verdis »Gefangenenchor« oder Wagners »Matrosenchor«. Aber auch das Musical hat in Sachen mitreißender Chorpartien einiges zu bieten. WDR Rundfunkchor und WDR Funkhausorchester präsentieren die schönsten Chöre aus Musical und Oper – von »Nabucco« bis »Troubadour«, von »Les Misérables« bis »Phantom der Oper«.
»If music be the food of love, play on!« William Shakespeare once wrote – and in the same spirit, Jakub Hrůša, as our musical »chef de cuisine«, has once again put together sumptuous treats for our audience that unmistakably carry his personal signature. And we start off with a delicacy: With Brahms’ concerto, composed in 1887, which is much more than just a small appetiser – and also follows a quote by Adelbert von Chamisso, that says: »Love is not a solo. Love is a duet.« For the two celebrated soloists Vilde Frang and Sol Gabetta, it was a heartfelt wish to perform this double concerto together at some point – and they will certainly add their artistic flavours to blend into a »giant eight-stringed violin« in accordance with the composer’s wishes. The musical menu also features works by two other favourite composers of our Chief Conductor: Martinů’s Symphony No. 3, which he wrote in 1944 while in exile in America, contains echoes of the folk music of his Czech homeland, as well as skilfully processing the zeitgeist of that time – and, most importantly, indulging in great emotions. After this mighty symphony, we serve Dvořák’s »Scherzo capriccioso«, because Jakub Hrůša loves to break with the conventions of a traditional concert programme time and again. The name already suggests a playfully tossed-together dish and this imaginative, lavishly orchestrated and skilfully crafted scherzo from 1883 is not so little, but it is still a charming nightcap: it is one of the many captivating works from Dvořák’s pen to win people’s hearts by storm.
The grand tour production of "The Phantom of the Opera" returns with a star-studded cast and a completely new musical arrangement. Awarded the Golden Sun 2023 by Sonnenklar TV, the production features world star Deborah Sasson and German musical star Uwe Kröger. The musical has been reimagined with new music by British composer Ryan Martin and impressive stage design by Daniel Stryjecki and Michael Scott. This version stays true to the original novel while incorporating operatic elements, creating a unique blend of opera and musical theater.
