Philharmonia Orchestra / Sol Gabetta / Santtu-Matias Rouvali

Mon, Aug 25, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonia Orchestra, Sol Gabetta (Cello), Santtu-Matias Rouvali (Conductor)
For many years, Sol Gabetta has been one of the most deeply moving and inspiring artists in the large Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival family. She performed at the SHMF for the first time in 2008 and was the acclaimed portrait artist in 2014 – the charismatic cellist has given a total of 35 concerts in a wide variety of formations in Schleswig-Holstein to date. Sol Gabetta will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the festival together with the Phiharmonia Orchestra from London under the direction of the young Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who as chief conductor of the legendary orchestra is the successor to stars such as Riccardo Muti and Giuseppe Sinopoli. The large-scale concert in the Elbphilharmonie begins with Tchaikovsky’s famous »Capriccio Italien« before Sol Gabetta performs Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto – one of the most demanding and intense works in the cello repertoire, which the composer wrote for none other than the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich. The second part is dedicated to the melodically and rhythmically complex Fifth Symphony by this year’s SHMF Portrait Artist Fazıl Say, who says of the composition process: »Writing a symphony with No. 5 is a challenge – somehow Beethoven is always behind you!«

Sol Gabetta (Cello), Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse (Ensemble), Tarmo Peltokoski (Conductor)
Due to a strike on March 12th, access to Cologne Philharmonic will be difficult. Trams and most buses will not operate, but other train services will. Visitors should consider alternative transportation, depart early, and anticipate delays. Cellist Sol Gabetta performs alongside rising star conductor Tarmo Peltokoski, who leads a program connected to Wagner's influence without playing any of his compositions.

Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden / Sol Gabetta / Tugan Sokhiev

Wed, May 21, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Sol Gabetta (Cello), Tugan Sokhiev (Conductor)
What do Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto and Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony have in common? That’s right: they both have the catalogue number 107 and – and this is the real point – the cello can be heard at the beginning. One could assume that the similarities end here. While Bruckner focusses on long melodic lines and vocal arches, Shostakovich is much more rhythmic. Nevertheless, both composers pursue the same goal: the expression of the greatest and most intense emotions. With Tugan Sokhiev and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, they are in the best of hands. With its unique sound – Herbert von Karajan compared it to the »lustre of old gold« – the venerable orchestra puts the two sound monoliths at the Elbphilharmonie in the perfect acoustic light. Star cellist Sol Gabetta provides the right pitch on the cello.
