"Luisa Miller" is Giuseppe Verdi’s third setting of a play by Friedrich Schiller. “It is a great drama, full of passion and very effective in theatrical terms,” the composer wrote to the librettist Salvadore Cammarano about Kabale und Liebe. In order to conform to the expectations of the censors and audience, Verdi first had to reduce the play to a libretto suitable for opera, moving the focus from Schiller’s political tale to the family drama. In his opera, first performed in Naples in 1849, Verdi produced outstanding character studies of all his protagonists. In this work he laid the foundation for many “Verdi types” of later years, e.g. Iago, Giorgio Germont, Aida or Desdemona. Luisa Miller was first performed in Hamburg at the Hamburg State Opera in 1981 in a new production conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli and directed by Luciano Damiani, who also designed the sets and costumes at the time. Anyone with vision should – make music! At least, as far as the Lux Quartet is concerned. With drummer Allison Miller and pianist Myra Melford, it combines two of the most visionary free-jazz musicians of our age. You could already experience both in the jazz series at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle as a duo; now, they come to the Recital Hall at the Elbphilharmonie as the main act with saxophonist Dayna Stephens and bassist Nick Dunston. With Alison Miller, one of the most creative drummers and bandleaders is at its heart. She was picked up by »Downbeat Magazine« in their line-up of the »Top 20 Jazz Drummers« and the American radio station NPR Music rates her composition »Otis Was a Polar Bear« as one of the »200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women«. The title of their current CD project »Tomorrowland« hints that the Lux Quartet is pursuing its experimental approach on its new record as well and once again expands on its own expectations of the future. As an established team, the combo can steadfastly rely on each other and so is in position to have no difficulty with free improvisations at any conceivable musical place.

»Swing King« Andrej Hermlin and his big band embark on a journey to America in the 1930s, to the great era of a music that is currently experiencing a remarkable renaissance – swing! The repertoire includes numerous well-known but also rare original arrangements, melodies by the most famous orchestras of the swing era, such as Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. Of course, songs from their recently released album »Swing Is On Parade« are not to be missed. The Swing Dance Orchestra is authentic down to the last detail: the sound, the arrangements, the microphones and the desks, the instruments and the wardrobe all correspond to the American originals of the time.
