Glenn Miller Orchestra

Sat, May 10, 2025, 16:00
Glenn Miller Orchestra, Scandinavia
The Glenn Miller Orchestra draws attention to world peace 80 years after the end of World War II, and highlights the importance of Glenn Miller’s music in this context. The big band welcomes 21 additional musicians at this concert, thus replicating the lineup of the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. We hear a series of original arrangements, some of which have not been played since the war.Through his music and the unique sound of the orchestra, Glenn Miller created his own genre of swing in the jazz world. In just four years, he launched 23 number one hits – more than Elvis and The Beatles. Glenn Miller became the biggest music icon in the US. He volunteered to join the military and brought his music to Europe through his military orchestra. This would ultimately cost him his life: he disappeared in an airplane over the English Channel. But his orchestra still performs his music all over the world, more than 80 years after his passing.Glenn Miller Orchestra Scandinavia formed in 2010 with a license from Glenn Miller Productions, Inc., New York, USA. Based in Stockholm, the orchestra is led by trombone player Jan Slottenäs and regularly tours Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Regarded by many internationally as the leading Glenn Miller orchestra, the ensemble includes several young musicians from Sweden’s jazz elite.

Luisa Miller

Sun, Nov 24, 2024, 19:00
Lorenzo Passerini (Musical Director), Adam Palka (Il Conte di Walter), Giorgio Berrugi (Rodolfo), George Gagnidze (Miller), Narea Son (Luisa), Brindley Sherratt (Wurm), Kristina Stanek (Federica), Nora Kazemieh (Laura), Ziad Nehme (Un Contadino), Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg (Orchestra), Chor der Hamburgischen Staatsoper (Chorus)
"Luisa Miller" is Giuseppe Verdi’s third setting of a play by Friedrich Schiller. “It is a great drama, full of passion and very effective in theatrical terms,” the composer wrote to the librettist Salvadore Cammarano about Kabale und Liebe. In order to conform to the expectations of the censors and audience, Verdi first had to reduce the play to a libretto suitable for opera, moving the focus from Schiller’s political tale to the family drama. In his opera, first performed in Naples in 1849, Verdi produced outstanding character studies of all his protagonists. In this work he laid the foundation for many “Verdi types” of later years, e.g. Iago, Giorgio Germont, Aida or Desdemona. Luisa Miller was first performed in Hamburg at the Hamburg State Opera in 1981 in a new production conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli and directed by Luciano Damiani, who also designed the sets and costumes at the time. Allison Miller & Myra Melford’s Lux Quartet

Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 20:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Dayna Stephens (Saxophon), Myra Melford (Piano), Nick Dunston (Bass), Allison Miller (Drums)
Anyone with vision should – make music! At least, as far as the Lux Quartet is concerned. With drummer Allison Miller and pianist Myra Melford, it combines two of the most visionary free-jazz musicians of our age. You could already experience both in the jazz series at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle as a duo; now, they come to the Recital Hall at the Elbphilharmonie as the main act with saxophonist Dayna Stephens and bassist Nick Dunston. With Alison Miller, one of the most creative drummers and bandleaders is at its heart. She was picked up by »Downbeat Magazine« in their line-up of the »Top 20 Jazz Drummers« and the American radio station NPR Music rates her composition »Otis Was a Polar Bear« as one of the »200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women«. The title of their current CD project »Tomorrowland« hints that the Lux Quartet is pursuing its experimental approach on its new record as well and once again expands on its own expectations of the future. As an established team, the combo can steadfastly rely on each other and so is in position to have no difficulty with free improvisations at any conceivable musical place.

Insight Orchestra

Sat, Jun 28, 2025, 15:00
»Insight Orchestra« focuses not on a single instrument, but on a whole number of them: how does an entire orchestra function? What instruments does an orchestra contain? Who sits where, and what does a conductor look like from the front? People attending this event will listen to their next orchestral concert with different ears and may even hear the odd code that the musicians occasionally send each other in a kind of secret language. The Elbphilharmonie’s »Insight« events give people deeper insights into musical phenomena. Experts in different fields explain aspects from their day-to-day work clearly and entertainingly and are happy to answer the public’s questions.
