Mozart's Hoffmeister Quartet was written a year after he began composing „Figaro“ and was published by Hoffmeister in 1786. A strange mixture of cheerfulness and melancholy connects the great quartet with the opera. Alfred Einstein said of the Adagio that it „speaks of suffering never before heard in such depth“. Schubert's Quartet in G major D 887 from 1826 was ahead of its time - it took almost half a century for this „uncompromising exploration of the themes of major and minor, life and death, hope and despair“ to find an appropriate response from critics and audiences.

This recital opens with Bach's trio sonatas for violin and harpsichord, highlighting the harpsichord's novel equality. Schubert's C-Major Fantasy for violin and piano, written for Josef Slavík, challenged audiences with its length and free form. Sibelius's Nocturne from "Belshazzar's Feast" follows Leschanah's palace dialogue with the stars. Saint-Saëns's first violin sonata, announced with humor, became a hit. This will be an emotionally powerful chamber concert centred around works that are close to the hearts of our four orchestra musicians. One of the composers will be on the podium himself: Gabriele Campagna has been a member of the Bamberg Symphony since 2022, but the violinist is a multi-talented musician who not only plays several instruments, but also passionately composes. His »Three Pieces« for string quartet are brand new and exciting music. Janáček’s magnificent first string quartet is entitled »Kreutzer Sonata« after Tolstoy’s novella, also taking a bow to Beethoven’s work of the same name and, in his words, revolving around »a woman, desperate, grief-stricken, exhausted to death«. He composed it in just one week in 1923 with almost searing vigour, driven by his love for Kamila Stösslová, 38 years younger than him: »note for note« fell »into his pen, glowing«. As a wonderful interlude, there is composing women’s power: the exciting artist Caroline Shaw was explicitly inspired by Haydn’s outstanding last string quartet in 2011, from which she quotes and catapults the whole into the musical world of the 21st century with »ludicrous, delicate, colourful transitions« – until a fading cello solo symbolises only the »memory of fragments of an old melody«. Finally, the dramatic quartet sounds of Schubert’s famous piece from 1824, a year of sorrow for him. It took its thematic material and name from his song of the same name to a poem by Matthias Claudius – and the central variations follow the poetic dialogue between »Death and the Maiden«. A thoroughly harrowing work, but as Schubert once said encouragingly: »Whoever loves music can never be completely unhappy.«
Calidore String Quartett, photo: Marco Borgreve Franz Schubert’s biographers puzzle over why this brilliant composer, who was not fully appreciated during his lifetime, left so many incomplete scores and sketches. As in the case of his most famous unfinished work (the Symphony in B minor), it is unclear why Schubert abandoned the work he had begun in the winter of 1820 on a quartet in C minor (after all, the completed first movement promised a fine work). Happily, this was not Schubert’s last word in the genre, and the sole movement of the incomplete quartet functions today as the Quartettsatz in C minor. Thirty-five years earlier, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had received a commission from an enterprising Viennese publisher for a cycle of uncomplicated piano quartets, popular with amateur musicians performing at home. However, Mozart’s works stood out from similar repertoire and heralded the arrival of the great Romantic forms sometimes referred to as chamber piano concertos. One could hardly speak of amateur addressees of Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, as he dedicated the work to an extremely talented pianist, his wife Clara. She was the soloist in the work’s public premiere at Leipzig’s famous Gewandhaus. The composition, which gives the pianist hardly a moment’s rest, was written at a time when the Schumanns were passionately engaged in analysing the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
776 / 1500 Übersetzter Text The Alinde Quartet, named after Franz Schubert's song „Alinde“, is currently working with Hänssler Classic and Deutschlandfunk on the challenging project of recording all of the string quartets by the composer, who died at an early age. The unique point: Each CD also features a commissioned composition inspired by Schubert, bridging the gap between past and present. All six parts should be available by Schubert's 200th birthday in 2028. In addition to two Schubert quartets - including the famous „Death and the Maiden“ - this concert will feature a work inspired by the composer as well as a quartet by the young Barcelona composer Marc Migó, which is based on the Catalan folk dance Sardana.

In concert, it is meant to be performed before Franz Schubert’s great String Quintet in C major, which Racine has described as the “Himalayas of chamber music” – a wonderful means of providing this Romantic monument with a fitting introduction (a “hillock,” as Racine modestly puts it) and opening up new perspectives by placing it in a contemporary context. In between these two works will be Brahms’ luxuriant String Quartet in A minor, in which the composer amiably refers to Schubert’s Quartet in A minor. Either way, this will be a concert among friends.

British composer Thomas Adès’s Arcadiana combines musical and nonmusical influences—from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte to the paintings of Poussin and Watteau, to Greek mythology—to evoke paradisiacal scenes. In its second concert of the season, the Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet performs the piece, written in 1994 and already considered a contemporary classic, alongside 19thcentury quartets by Schubert and Beethoven.
