NDR Bigband / Evi Filippou / Tim Hagans

»Good music by good people« is the simple formula with which Evi Filippou, who hails from Greece, outlines her artistic goals. In close collaboration with trumpeter and arranger Tim Hagans, Evi Filippou has composed a concert programme for the NDR Bigband that brings together the different worlds of her work: jazz, classical and improvised music; Greece and Central Europe.

Lux Nova Duo

The Lux Nova Duo, with its distinctive combination of accordion and guitar, combines classical and folkloristic music from Latin America and Europe in an extraordinary concert experience. The pulsating rhythms of Cuban music, the mystical atmosphere of the Andes, the passion of Argentinian tango and the innovative interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s masterpieces combine to create a unique musical experience. As a special highlight, new pieces inspired by Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica will be performed.

The name of the band is an allusion to a piece by the Brazilian bossa nova composer and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim and at the same time the programme of the band’s music. The lyrics of the song in question are an enumeration of everything that belongs to a fulfilled human life, and so the musicians have selected for their repertoire from the almost endless wealth of Brazilian sounds what they found suitable, extraordinary or otherwise remarkable. Samba, Bossa Nova, Choros, Musica Popular Brasileira - stylistically, there are no limits except their own.

Alejandro Carrillo Gamboa is regarded as one of the best guitarists in Europe and is appreciated for his dazzling musical virtuosity, which is rich in tonal colours and artistic forms of expression. He delights his audiences in renowned concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Konzerthaus Berlin and Vienna. The programme »Latin American Guitar Sounds – Sombras del Fuego« is a musical journey through Latin American and European music. Alejandro’s fiery, gentle sounds evoke longing memories of a warm summer evening. Just the right programme for the cold season! A very special highlight of the evening will be the artist’s own compositions and vocals. Alejandro will surprise his audience with songs from his latest winter album.

In her debut performance at the Elbphilharmonie, Maria Baptist presents her new solo programme »Hopes & Fears« – a meditation on the attitude to life of letting oneself be guided by hopes rather than fears, oscillating between framing composition and free improvisation.

A breathtaking musical journey that shows in a folkloristic and cheerful way the musical bridges that connect Bach and other classical European icons with the most beautiful Latin American rhythms. The concert begins with Bach and ends with him. In between, the musicians show the full richness of Latin American music.

Tim Burton's favourite composer / Metropolis Piano Quartet

It promises to be a remarkable expedition in directions not obvious for chamber music. Spanish music enjoyed a heyday of national style at the turn of the 20th century. We are familiar in Poland with works by de Falla, Albéniz or Granados from this repertoire. Turina, on the other hand, is mainly associated with guitar music lovers. In the mellifluous Piano Quartet op. 67, he combines catchy Spanish themes with classical form, characteristic simplicity and serenity. The music of the eminent Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks is characterised by a meditative tone famous in this part of Europe. His Piano Quartet will unite lovers of classical harmonies with those seeking more contemporary forms of expression. Danny Elfman's quartet, meanwhile, will add to this concert the eclectic spirit of Hollywood, where the composer, acclaimed for his soundtracks for films by Tim Burton (Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland), Gus Van Sant (Milk) or the Simpsons series, is well known.
