Piano//Duo EnsariSchuch

Sun, Mar 3, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Gülru Ensari (Piano), Herbert Schuch (Piano)
He loves her musical spontaneity and she appreciates his flair for special programmes: The Piano//Duo EnsariSchuch! Making music together as a piano duo requires not only musical skills, but also almost »blind« trust in each other. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that Gülru Ensari and Herbert Schuch also have a private connection: Both have been a married couple for nine years and have a daughter together. The two are an ideal constellation because they combine the advantages of different worlds: Herbert’s childhood in Romania, as well as Gülru’s Turkish roots – and can therefore come up with a wide range of musical colours. In their programme »Eternity«, the two shed light on the theme of eternity in music and seek answers to many questions: How does infinity explain itself? Which pieces make you forget space and time? Is redemption or nothingness waiting behind death? They approach these essential questions through the works of Brahms, Schubert, Ravel and Beethoven.

The colourful, vibrant life of Naples in all its shades: the group Ars Nova Napoli captures it in its music. The musicians also span the spectrum from the streets of the bustling metropolis to Apulia, Calabria, Sicily and beyond the Mediterranean. Since its inception, the sextet headed by singer Marcello Squillante has committed itself to exploring the most diverse genres of southern Italy – from the pizzica of Apulia via the serenades of Sicily to the Calabrian tarantella. They readily listen to the traditional singing of the local people and how they handle their instruments at first hand. With accordion, fiddle, trumpet, mandolin, gaita bagpipes, double bass and various frame drums, Ars Nova Napoli create a sound that immediately conjures up the sound of southern Italy – both down to earth and theatrical. In its infancy, the band was a real outdoor enterprise: It played the squares, markets and alleyways of Naples, enhanced family events and public festivals. The reputation of this fantastic sextet rapidly grew beyond the confines of Naples from Sicily to Paris, from Athens to Switzerland. And now you can enjoy the unifying vitality of Campania’s capital on the Elbe as well!

Geister Duo / Piano Recital

Wed, Apr 30, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
David Salmon (Piano), Manuel Vieillard (Piano)
The turning point from the 19th to the 20th century is one of the most exciting moments in the history of music – especially in France, where late-Romantic offshoots combined with the new sounds of impressionism and expressionism into a scintillating mix. At the end of the »Pianomania« series, where in this season everything revolves around the theme of »Transcriptions«, Geister Duo, consisting of the two pianists David Salmon and Manuel Vieillard, takes us along on a journey into precisely this period and demonstrates that large orchestral works can also display their appeal on 176 keys. The two of them got to know each other while studying in Paris and have formed a steadfast duo ever since. In 2021, they scooped up big at the ARD International Music Competition and, besides winning First Prize, they also won five special prizes. Alongside Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, one of the most important protagonists in turn-of-the-century France was also the Russian Igor Stravinsky, whose ground-breaking ballet music – including the infamous scandalous ballet »The Rite of Spring« – premiered in Paris. Geister Duo now opens its concert in Hamburg with a four-handed version of Stravinsky’s ballet »Petrushka«, in which three puppets of a charlatan come alive at a fair in Saint Petersburg. It proceeds no less figuratively on two pianos after the interval – with Paul Dukas’ setting of Goethe’s »The Sorcerer’s Apprentice« to music. This primarily became world famous thanks to Walt Disney’s film »Fantasia« with Mickey Mouse as the clumsy sorcerer’s pupil. The programme is rounded off with a selection from Debussy’s atmospherically dense »Trois Nocturnes« and the orchestral hit »Boléro«, which Ravel arranged for two pianos.

In the Finnish national epic »Kalevala«, the magical singer Väinämöinen makes a stringed plucked instrument from the jaws of a giant pike and a second one from birch wood. As he plays, all the animals of the forest come to him and even the people stop their work to listen to this Nordic Orpheus. The sounds of the so-called »kantele« – a box zither that is not only common in Finland, but also in Estonia and north-west Russia – enchant listeners to this day.
