Gewandhausorchester, Antonio Pappano Dirigent
Gewandhaus Leipzig, Großer Saal (Leipzig)
Ferruccio Busoni, a polymath, amassed a vast library and frequented museums. He befriended Rilke and Zweig, the latter noting Busoni's introspective playing style. Despite lacking a 'star' persona, his stage presence was captivating. Busoni, based in Leipzig, networked with Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Mahler, and Petri. He premiered works at the Gewandhaus and was renowned for Bach transcriptions. His Piano Concerto, op. 39, unconventionally incorporates a male chorus. Busoni remained unfazed by criticism, likening it to a crashing wave.
