Cat Power sings Dylan

Sat, Aug 24, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Cat Power (Vocals), Henry Munson (Guitar), Adeline Jasso (Guitar), Chris Joyner (Piano), Jordan Summers (Organ), Erk Paporazi (Bass), Josh Adams (Drums)
Under the moniker Cat Power, US musician Chan Marshall has perfected the art of cover songs over the past three decades. With a melancholic, smoky voice, subtle instrumentation, and a minimalist groove, she captures the essence of the songs. Cat Power has now covered one of the most legendary concerts in pop history: Bob Dylan’s 1966 performance at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, which became famous as a live recording mistakenly labeled »Royal Albert Hall«. You could also hear the protests of the audience when Dylan picked up the electric guitar in the second part of the concert, breaking with the purist folk tradition to transition to rock music. Three of her eleven studio albums since 1995 are cover albums, where songs by the Rolling Stones or Lana Del Rey sound as if they were originally by Cat Power. The FAZ referred to this as »everse pop«, describing it as the »re-transformation of mass-produced music into something intimate and idiosyncratic«. Cat Power reinterpreted this concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2022 and released it as a live album. It is both a tribute to Bob Dylan and a clever reinterpretation of a pop artist who now is reviving Dylan’s legendary concert at the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie as part of the Kampnagel International Summer Festival.

Sat, Feb 22, 2025, 11:00

Churches are gradually emptying, yet everyone still needs moments of contemplation. Reflect with Bach is just such a moment. For each edition, the unconventional Flemish poet Maud Vanhauwaert, presenter Lex Bohlmeijer and the Netherlands Bach Society are joined by a different writer and thinker, to explore the universal themes of life and offer tranquillity through the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Today’s theme is: power. With: Jurriën Hamer. In this Reflect with Bach, philosopher, lawyer and writer Jurriën Hamer reflects on the theme of power. His story is interwoven with parts of three cantatas by Bach that form the base for his magnum opus, the Mass in B Minor. Jurriën Hamer studied law and philosophy at Utrecht University. In 2022, he published his first book: ‘ Waarom schurken pech hebben en helden geluk: een nieuwe filosofie van de vrije wil’ (Why Villains Always Lose and Heroes Win: a new philosophy of free will). As a writer, speaker and moderator, he shows how philosophical ideas about justice, guilt and free will have a huge influence on our lives, in an accessible, humorous and inspiring way. This concert is part of the series Reflect with Bach. Please note: the spoken language of this series is Dutch.

Stand-up comedy is booming and we’re celebrating. A fearless band of young comedians is conquering live stages and the Internet – Kampf der Künste brings the most explosive to the stage of the Elbphilharmonie, where virtuoso humour artists offer bizarre perspectives on the completely normal, completely crazy world. Bitterly beautiful punchlines about small happiness, great misery and infinite inadequacy. Or simply wonderfully honest voices that you should have heard. KDK Stand Up delivers an evening that is curated to the point and really enjoyable. Or to put it another way: finally an evening event where you can have a good laugh even with your least funny friends. The stand-up scene is fresher and livelier than it has been for a long time. A high-intensity workout for the diaphragm – witty and crazy, laconic and escalating.

übelst unverstärkt: Lawrence Power

Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 19:30
Bunker Feldstraße, Uebel & Gefährlich (Hamburg)
Lawrence Power (Viola), Mitglieder des NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchesters
A long bar, dim lighting, beanbags and a relaxed audience. This is what concert evenings at »übelst unverstärkt« look like, where musicians from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra perform with international soloists. Alan Gilbert, chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, has already dropped by with his viola. Martin Fröst, Joshua Bell, Daniel Müller-Schott, Anna Vinnitskaya and Augustin Hadelich followed with great live acts. And they all had a lot of fun performing in a neighbourhood club and presenting captivating chamber music up close.
