The power of brass, the might of the manuals

Fri, May 23, 2025, 19:30
Ireneusz Wyrwa (Organ), Piotr Nowak (Trumpet), Tomasz Hajda (Trombone), Michał Żymełka (Drums), Benedykt Matusik (Trumpet), Krzysztof Tomczyk (French horn), Jakub Urbańczyk (Tuba), Wojciech Morcinczyk (Drums)
Although the organ is traditionally associated with sacred music and grand concerts, it can also be a fascinating complement to less typical chamber settings. The untypical combinations in this year’s organ concert series provide unique sounds and new, unexpected combinations. The result? We become more open to new interpretational possibilities and free experimenting. The programme of the concert, including pieces by Petr Eben, Otto Hoser, Thierry Escaich and Craig Phillips, shows how well the organ can sound paired with brass instruments and percussion. Hear it for yourselves: a fascinating richness of new possibilities! [Alexandra Kozowicz] Concert duration: approximately 50 minutes

übelst unverstärkt: Lawrence Power

Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 19:30
Bunker Feldstraße, Uebel & Gefährlich (Hamburg)
Lawrence Power (Viola), Mitglieder des NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchesters
A long bar, dim lighting, beanbags and a relaxed audience. This is what concert evenings at »übelst unverstärkt« look like, where musicians from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra perform with international soloists. Alan Gilbert, chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, has already dropped by with his viola. Martin Fröst, Joshua Bell, Daniel Müller-Schott, Anna Vinnitskaya and Augustin Hadelich followed with great live acts. And they all had a lot of fun performing in a neighbourhood club and presenting captivating chamber music up close.

Today’s theme is: power. With: Jurriën Hamer. In this Reflect with Bach, philosopher, lawyer and writer Jurriën Hamer reflects on the theme of power. In 2022, he published his first book: ‘ Waarom schurken pech hebben en helden geluk: een nieuwe filosofie van de vrije wil’ (Why Villains Always Lose and Heroes Win: a new philosophy of free will). As a writer, speaker and moderator, he shows how philosophical ideas about justice, guilt and free will have a huge influence on our lives, in an accessible, humorous and inspiring way. This concert is part of the series Reflect with Bach. Please note: the spoken language of this series is Dutch.
