Date & Time

For the first time in Konserthuset, we get to hear music composed for the ancient Australian wind instrument, the didgeridoo. Both in a newly written piece for strings, didgeridoo, and oboe d'amore by Loke Risberg, and in the intensely vibrant sixteenth string quartet by Australian Peter Sculthorpe, where the instrument complements the four strings. Playing the didgeridoo, we have Björn Bohlin, a multi-instrumentalist who previously played English horn in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.Gabriella Smith's Carrot Revolution is a tribute to... New Friday with KammarensembleN

Fri, Nov 22, 2024, 20:30
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
KammarensembleN, Christian Karlsen (Conductor)
Since its inception in 1984, KammarensembleN has been one of the most important ensembles for contemporary music. Its members are distinguished instrumentalists, and the ensemble has performed at several major festivals for contemporary music, such as Ultima in Oslo, Gaudeamus Festival in Amsterdam, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and ISCM World Music Days in Stockholm and Hong Kong. Many composers have written directly for the ensemble, resulting in well over a hundred premieres over the years. Together with directors, lighting designers, and video artists, KammarensembleN has carried out a series of acclaimed concert series in Stockholm. The ensemble has also undertaken several tours and recorded several critically acclaimed CDs.For the anniversary concert, they take on Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen's Schnee – ten canons for nine instruments. It is music with crystalline clarity and evocative rhythms. The ten canons are presented in pairs, something Abrahamsen likens to seeing two versions in different colours of a painting with the same motif. For his sophisticated music, Abrahamsen has been awarded both the Nordic Council Music Prize and the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. He has also been a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music since 2017.***New Friday is the series for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. Come early, stay late – the bar will be open before and after the concert with drinks and appetizers.

New Friday with double ensembles

Fri, Oct 18, 2024, 20:30
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Stockholms Saxofonkvartett, Quasar quatuor de saxophones, Fredrik Andersson (Presenter)
At this concert, we meet two saxophone quartets: Quasar Quatuor de Saxophones from Montreal and the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet. Both have been exploring contemporary music for decades and have toured worldwide. The quartets have also, individually, been responsible for commissioning and premiering numerous new pieces of music. There will also be a premiere tonight, featuring music for eight saxophones by Gordon Williamson, a Canadian composer based in Germany. Spanish composer José Evangelista was active in Montreal until his death in 2023, and his music often involves melodies layered on top of each other or echoing themselves.Swedish Tomner was recently acclaimed for her chamber opera Avskärmad (Shielded), in which she utilized AI technology. Here we hear Palindrome for saxophone quartet. Swedish composer Jenny Hettne often collaborates closely with the musicians. Her piece Swirls and Shades was written for both saxophone quartets performing tonight, and premiered in Montreal in 2019. The collaborative project is supported by Statens Kulturråd, Region Stockholm, Helge Ax:son Johnsons Stiftelse, Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.***New Friday is the series for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. Soup with string quartet

Fri, Oct 25, 2024, 12:15
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Daniela Bonfiglioli (Violin), Emma Agnas de Frumerie (Violin), Catarina Skoog Aquilonius (Viola), Erik Uusijärvi (Cello)
Music for string quartet by two composers not primarily associated with chamber music: Bedrich Smetana and Giacomo Puccini. In 2024, the 200th anniversary of Czech composer Bedrich Smetana's birth is celebrated. He is best known for his Moldau, but also wrote a wealth of other music – such as the string quartet From My Life. Sparkling romantic music that describes episodes in Smetana's life.2024 is also a year worth commemorating for Puccini: he passed away exactly 100 years earlier. Like Smetana, it is not chamber music that made him famous, but operas. But Puccini also loved the string quartet. I crisantemi is mournful music, an elegy for his friend Amadeo di Savoia. The chrysanthemum flower is a symbol of death, among other things. Some of the melodies in this music were reused in Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut, which became his first major success.Violinist Daniela Bonfiglioli has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2011, Emma de Frumerie since 2010. Viola player Catarina Skoog Aquilonius celebrates her 20th anniversary in the orchestra this year. Cellist Erik Uusijärvi has been a member of the cello section since 2023.***Menu: Root vegetable soup with parsley. The soup is served with sourdough bread, crispbread, butter, mineral water/light beer, coffee/tea and a piece of chocolate. Wine and beer available for purchase for those who wish. All soups are lactose- and gluten-free. Please inform us of any special dietary requirements when booking.

Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Borregaard & Rostamo Duo
New Friday is concerts for those who with curious interest want to explore our contemporary innovative music. Since 2008, he has been the principal/solo cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 2022 a professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Oslo- and Copenhagen-based Andreas Borregaard made his debut as an accordion soloist at the age of five. Today, he is one of the very best on the instrument. In their spiritually oriented program, the Borregaard & Rostamo duo mix a thousand years of music. We hear works by the abbess and medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen, Jouni Kaipainen's evocative Elemental Chanting, Britta Byström's Epiphanies, and the Polar Music Prize-winning Sofia Gubajdulina's In Croce – On the Cross. The latter is a title that relates both to the crucifixion and to how the gestures of music intersect.***New Friday is the series for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. JUILLIARD STRING QUARTET

Wed, Jan 22, 2025, 19:30
Juilliard String Quartet (String Quartet)
According to Jörg Widmann, Beethoven’s Opus 130 represents the “string quartet of string quartets.” His own Eighth and Tenth Quartets were written in response to the Viennese master’s late work, in particular its famous slow movement, titled “Cavatina.” The New York–based Juilliard String Quartet frames Widmann’s “Beethoven Studies” with their historical model, including both its traditional version and the Grosse Fuge, the work’s original finale.
