Since its inception in 1984, KammarensembleN has been one of the most important ensembles for contemporary music. At this concert, we meet two saxophone quartets: Quasar Quatuor de Saxophones from Montreal and the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet. Both have been exploring contemporary music for decades and have toured worldwide. The quartets have also, individually, been responsible for commissioning and premiering numerous new pieces of music.There will also be a premiere tonight, featuring music for eight saxophones by Gordon Williamson, a Canadian composer based in Germany. Spanish composer José Evangelista was active in Montreal until his death in 2023, and his music often involves melodies layered on top of each other or echoing themselves.Swedish Tomner was recently acclaimed for her chamber opera Avskärmad (Shielded), in which she utilized AI technology. Here we hear Palindrome for saxophone quartet. Swedish composer Jenny Hettne often collaborates closely with the musicians. Her piece Swirls and Shades was written for both saxophone quartets performing tonight, and premiered in Montreal in 2019. The collaborative project is supported by Statens Kulturråd, Region Stockholm, Helge Ax:son Johnsons Stiftelse, Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.***New Friday is the series for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. New Friday is concerts for those who with curious interest want to explore our contemporary innovative music. This Friday evening, we meet the Borregaard & Rostamo duo.Johannes Rostamo moves musically from early Baroque to contemporary art music, from jazz to folk music. Since 2008, he has been the principal/solo cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 2022 a professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Oslo- and Copenhagen-based Andreas Borregaard made his debut as an accordion soloist at the age of five. Today, he is one of the very best on the instrument.In their spiritually oriented program, the Borregaard & Rostamo duo mix a thousand years of music. We hear works by the abbess and medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen, Jouni Kaipainen's evocative Elemental Chanting, Britta Byström's Epiphanies, and the Polar Music Prize-winning Sofia Gubajdulina's In Croce – On the Cross. For the first time in Konserthuset, we get to hear music composed for the ancient Australian wind instrument, the didgeridoo. Both in a newly written piece for strings, didgeridoo, and oboe d'amore by Loke Risberg, and in the intensely vibrant sixteenth string quartet by Australian Peter Sculthorpe, where the instrument complements the four strings. Playing the didgeridoo, we have Björn Bohlin, a multi-instrumentalist who previously played English horn in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.Gabriella Smith's Carrot Revolution is a tribute to the ability to find new ways to approach older artistic forms and expressions. "The piece is a patchwork of my very contrasting influences," she says.The concert begins with Ghiribizzi for violin and cello by the Moldovan-Austrian composer and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. On her series of curiously explorative "ghiribizzi," she says: "It's not a tribute to Paganini, but I borrowed the title from his peculiar pieces for violin and guitar." On Good Friday, the acclaimed British vocal ensemble Tenebrae and its founder Nigel Short are heading on a musical pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. In his full-length a-cappella work »Path of Miracles«, Joby Talbot – who was born in Wimbledon in 1971 – has captured the special atmosphere of four spiritual sites along the Camino de Santiago. Based on Bible quotations and medieval sources, 17 independent vocal parts in seven languages and great stylistic diversity depict the legends of saints and miracles associated with this pilgrimage route. The English composer found his inspiration for the 2005 work – a commissioned piece written specially for Tenebrae – »on location«: »Over the course of ten days I watched little clouds of Pyrenean mist wafting through the medieval streets of Roncesvalles, marvelled at the gruesome reliquaries in austere Burgos, saw storks on church spires in León as the evening sun poured through acres of stained glass, and witnessed traditionally clad Galician villagers harvesting their fields with hand scythes in a manner unchanged for a millennium.« Having reached Santiago and touched the hollow in the pillar at the cathedral, he felt a special closeness to the many generations of pilgrims who had followed the same tradition. »The connection to the past seemed palpable, and it was the feeling I experienced at that moment that I resolved to try to express in the music.«

»Where to sow love, joy as love grows up.« Shakespeare already knew this – which is why we are setting off a lovingly put together musical firework at the turn of the year: it bears the stamp of our guest conductor, who is convinced that »we can understand ourselves and our feelings better through music«. Roderick Cox found his way against all odds: he grew up in a single-parent home in Macon, a small town in Georgia. There was no money to buy an instrument or go to concerts – until a foundation helped him out and he eventually got access to a classical music training programme. Today, he is a strong champion of young African-American artists from underrepresented social backgrounds. And he attracts international attention with his well thought-out concert programmes. In his debut on our conductor’s podium, he would like to showcase the range of US-American music – a fascinating mixture, sparkling like champagne. And although the pieces all originate from his home country, they also deal with more global themes and their expressive power is boundless nonetheless. The musical sparklers and possibly a few more sparking encores add a festive flair, but hopefully also remind us all how invaluable the power of music is for love and peace – in the words of Roderick Cox: »Classical music is not just an art to make us feel good, but it should also inspire social thinking, point the finger at injustice, support our freedom and connect people with each other.«

French composer Gabriel Fauré's music shines with melodic charm, sprinkled with a touch of nostalgia. In small pieces like Après un rêve (After a Dream) and Sicilienne for cello and piano, it's easy to imagine a Paris bathed in romantic glow. Exquisitely beautiful is Pavane opus 50, one of Fauré's most beloved pieces often performed in its orchestrated version.Johan Fransén, alternate section leader in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's clarinet section, along with Mikael Sjögren, alternate section leader in the cello section, and the orchestra's pianist Stefan Lindgren, form a trio in a program entirely dedicated to Gabriel Fauré.As a concluding highlight, we hear Fauré's exquisite piano trio from 1923. In the first movement, there is a thoughtfulness bordering on melancholy, yet it is not sorrowful music. The second movement is dreamy and heartfelt, while the third is full of energy and strong contrasts. By around 1910, Fauré had begun to experience hearing problems, and when he composed this piano trio – one of his last completed works – he was likely completely deaf.***Menu: Green pea soup with Västerbotten cheese. Who’s whistling »On the beautiful blue Danube«? Oh right, Ernie and Bert are on their way to the New Year’s concert in the Elbphilharmonie. You can tell from the tip of Ernie’s nose that he’s thinking about how he could make himself useful in the concert: »Well, I’m going on a manhunt with the ›Bandit Gallop‹, I’m turning the ›Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka‹ into a ›Ritsch-Ratsch-Polka‹ and when Bert is completely exhausted after the ›Radetzky March‹, I’ll sing him a lullaby. In the middle of a concert? Oh, that doesn’t matter. You all just sing along, don’t you?«
