To kick off his »Reflektor« Festival at the Elbphilharmonie, you can experience guitarist and legendary pioneer of New York’s downtown music scene, Marc Ribot, in two very different settings: one, very intimately in a solo concert with battered acoustic guitar; the other, inspired by punk, loud and brutal with the power trio Ceramic Dog, accompanied by Shahzad Ismaily on bass and Ches Smith on drums. Marc Ribot’s solo concerts are intense and unpredictable experiences. Ribot covers the spectrum between free... Read full text

Marc Ribot & Rootless Cosmopolitans

Sun, Nov 17, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
1. Set:, Marc Ribot (Guitar), Anthony Coleman (Keyboards), 2. Set:, Ava Mendoza (Guitar), Brad Jones (Bass), Ches Smith (Drums), Chad Taylor (Drums)
»›Rootless Cosmopolitans‹ was the first record over which I had full control,« says Marc Ribot about the album he released in 1990 as the first under his own name. So, it is also the album that is the entry point into his fascinating work for many of his fans and it enjoys a particularly high profile. With the Rootless Cosmopolitans, Ribot brings together all the different styles and influences he tried and tested separately for years for the culmination of the »Reflektor« Festival dedicated to him and presents an original horror soundtrack in the first part of the concert. As a result, his own compositions and numerous cover versions, such as the Beatles classic »While My Guitar Gently Weeps«, provide ample room for noise, free improvisation and rock. With bassist Brad Jones, a musician from the original line-up with whom Ribot recorded the »Rootless Cosmopolitans« album and its successor »Requiem For What’s His Name« in 1990 and 1992 is here in the concert at the Elbphilharmonie. The group is completed by the extraordinary drummer Ches Smith, who also plays with Ceramic Dog. In the first set of the concert, Ribot and pianist Anthony Coleman play their own soundtrack to the film »Shadows Choose Their Horrors«. It is the dark and melodic diary of a necromancer living on the edge between the mortal world and the realm of lost souls. Sinister forces surround Madame G (Winsome Brown) as she tries to bond with her favorite undead. Using magic and ritual to give them new life and pleasures, Madame G is shocked by the devastating outcome. Marc Ribot provides this experimental re-working of the early silent film horror with an equally experimental guitar soundtrack that reinforces the film’s goosebump-inducing atmosphere.

Marc Ribot Quartet »Hurry Red Telephone« / Red Lily Quintet

Sat, Nov 16, 2024, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Marc Ribot (Guitar), Mary Halvorson (Guitar), James Brandon Lewis (Saxophon), Hilliard Greene (Bass), Chad Taylor (Drums), Kirk Knuffke (Trumpet), Tomeka Reid (Cello), Silvia Bolognesi (Bass), Lily Glick Finnegan (Drums)
The Marc Ribot Trio celebrated a premiere in a new line-up at the famous NYC Winter Jazzfest in 2024 – now they come with James Brandon Lewis on saxophone as support to Hamburg for the »Reflektor« Festival dedicated to Ribot. The musicians first played together in 2005 on the album »Spiritual Unity«, a homage to the legendary free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. Alongside Marc Ribot and drummer Chad Taylor as consistent members of the trio, at that time Henry Grimes still played on bass. He worked with Cecil Tayler, Don Cherry and Albert Ayler, amongst others, in the 1960s. In the current line-up, Hilliard Greene replaces Henry Grimes, who passed away in 2020, on double bass. With James Brandon Lewis, whose Gospel-influenced sound on tenor saxophone seamlessly blends into the eruptive sound of the band, the trio becomes a quartet. James Brandon Lewis, as bandleader of the Red Lily Quartet, also takes centre stage in the second set of the evening. The programme »For Mahalia, with Love« is a tribute to the Gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, who made famous traditional songs, such as »Swing Low«, »Sparrow« and »Wade in the Water«. Lewis has a personal, emotional connection to the work of Mahalia Jackson: his grandmother had introduced the music to him when he was just a child. So, he also describes his arrangements as a »Three-way conversation between Mahalia, my grandmother and me.«

Listening Session with Marc Ribot

Sun, Nov 17, 2024, 15:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kaistudio 1 (Hamburg)
Marc Ribot (Talk), Tom R. Schulz (Moderator)
What kind of music does the guitarist Marc Ribot, who himself is such a versatile instrumentalist? His own stylistic spectrum – as immortalised on countless albums – ranges from jazz and rock to noise and punk. At the Listening Session, the Elbphilharmonie’s Kaistudio 1 is turned into a living room – a cosy setting in which Marc Ribot, as part of the festival dedicated to him, presents his favourite records that have influenced him and that continue to inspire him. Elbphilharmonie PLUS is a programme that opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the Elbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an experience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie+ programme, as do concert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and community centres.

Marc-André Hamelin / Piano Recital

Thu, Jun 19, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Marc-André Hamelin (Piano)
Marc-André Hamelin’s last performance in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie thrilled audiences and the press alike: The Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper reported enthusiastically on the exceptional pianist’s spectacular performance, setting a speed record in the breakneck difficult final movement of Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata. Indeed, Marc-André Hamelin is recognised worldwide as a »super-pianist« with unlimited technical abilities: No work seems to present him with serious difficulties. This time, too, he presents challenging works by Haydn, Beethoven, Medtner and Rachmaninoff – a varied programme that raises great expectations.

Chris de Burgh solo

Mon, Oct 13, 2025, 19:00
