Marc Ribot solo & Ceramic Dog

Fri, Nov 15, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Marc Ribot (Guitar), Shahzad Ismaily (Bass guitar), Ches Smith (Drums)
To kick off his »Reflektor« Festival at the Elbphilharmonie, you can experience guitarist and legendary pioneer of New York’s downtown music scene, Marc Ribot, in two very different settings: one, very intimately in a solo concert with battered acoustic guitar; the other, inspired by punk, loud and brutal with the power trio Ceramic Dog, accompanied by Shahzad Ismaily on bass and Ches Smith on drums. Marc Ribot’s solo concerts are intense and unpredictable experiences. Ribot covers the spectrum between free improvisation, blues, folk, soul and rhythm & blues and not only plays his instrument, but well and truly arranges it. Ribot presents brand-new material here, which he is also releasing in 2024 as his, in total, seventh solo album. »Subtlety is not my strong point,« says Marc Ribot in the context of his trio Ceramic Dog, which of course is only partly true. It is true that the band plays with great impact and very loudly. Ceramic Dog are in essence a rock band, but they weave a wide array of stylistic influences from pop, psychedelic and disco to noise, funk and jazz in their music. The concert also provides the opportunity to get to know Marc Ribot as a singer whose lyrics exemplify a quirky sense of humour, irony and, frequently also, a political stance: »I’ve got a right to say ›fuck you‹.«
