Aural Spaces – Seeing with your Ears (listening session)

Sun, Dec 15, 2024, 14:30
Leroy de Böck (Actor), Sarah van Lamsweerde (Director), Hannes Wallrafen (Advice), 4DSOUND (Sound design)
The system goes beyond regular sound amplification and can bring both realistic and abstract sounds to life. In 4DSOUND, virtual sound objects seem to be really present inside of the space. The audience experiences more than just sound; people often indicate that they can actually 'see' the sounds. Especially with closed eyes, they can visualize the sounds thanks to the impressive properties of the sound system. With Seeing with your Ears, this phenomenon is taken one step further by working with visually impaired artists. They use 4DSOUND as an instrument to guide the audience through a sensory journey in space and time. Narrator Leroy de Böck takes you out of the here and now, to a variety of places and times. Listen attentively with your eyes closed and the images will come naturally. We happily invite people with a visual impairment, and sighted people are also welcome. The goal is to exchange experiences by listening to an entire world of spatial sound together.4DSOUND is an Amsterdam-based studio focusing on spatial sound as a creative medium. For over a decade, they have been pioneering the design of advanced spatial audio software and omnidirectional sound systems. Through the development of bespoke technology and their close collaborations with innovative artists, the studio fosters a dynamic international network of creatives, engineers, studios, and institutions within the fields of music, art, education, and research. This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. From 12 to 15 December, a new dimension will be added to the live music experience in the Recital Hall of The Concertgebouw. The familiar red plush chairs will make way for a 4DSOUND installation, consisting of 13 pillars with 41 speakers. Classical acoustic methods are combined with the modern technology of 4DSOUND, further expanding the possibilities of sound experience.Aural Spaces explores the boundaries between sound and space, blurring them and merging them. The result is a completely immersive listening experience that’s all too rare. Discover and feel how the music moves through space!

Night Session

Sat, Jun 21, 2025, 21:30
Konzerthaus Berlin, Großer Saal (Berlin)
Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Joana Mallwitz (Conductor)
‘We tell ourselves stories through good music,’ our chief conductor Joana Mallwitz is convinced. And that's why there are once again two Night Sessions this season, which she has newly developed with and for the Konzerthaus Berlin. The concerts with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, which start at 9.30 pm on Fridays, always revolve around a theme that she presents in an unusual stage setting and to which a guest panellist contributes a different perspective on the common topic.

Aural Spaces – Vox.Infold II by Ruby Singh (listening session – low stimuli)

Fri, Dec 13, 2024, 14:30
Ruby Singh
Ruby Singh is a multi-faceted Vancouver-based artist who combines music, poetry, photography, and film. His work explores themes of mythology, memory, activism, and fantasy, and draws inspiration from the sounds of nature. Singh’s innovative projects include Vox.Infold, an a cappella ensemble and album project that transcends cultural boundaries by bringing together vocalists from diverse backgrounds. The immersive and ritualistic nature of this vocal piece makes it a perfect conduit for this Low Stimuli listening session. This piece was spatialized in 4DSOUND at Monom Studios.Musicians that performed on Vox.Infold II:Tiffany AyalikInuksuk MackayDawn PembertonRussell WallaceShamik BilgiTiffany MosesHussein JanmohamedDuring this listening session, the music is softer, the lights are less bright (dimmed) and the number of visitors is limited. This creates more space in the hall. The concert is during the day and the hall has been specially adapted for people who are sensitive to stimuli. Employees receive instructions on how to best support visitors. In addition, there is a quiet room that is accessible before, during and after the listening session. There is also a separate entrance and personal guidance is possible if desired.During Aural Spaces, the red plush chairs in the Recital Hall are replaced by a 4DSOUND installation. This allows you to sit or lie anywhere in the hall to enjoy the music. The audience can experience the music better due to fewer environmental stimuli. At the end of the session, there is silent applause with jazz hands. An extensive visual preparation and stimulus map will follow later. We would like to invite people who are sensitive to stimuli, but others who enjoy a quiet atmosphere are also welcome for a relaxing Friday afternoon. We ask everyone to take into account the etiquette of low stimuli. This listening session has been specially developed for people with stimulus sensitivity. Would you like to use a separate entrance, personal guidance from The Concertgebouw and/or a quiet room that is accessible before, during and after the session? Then order your tickets including the use of facilities. This does not cost anything extra. Please note: there are a maximum of 20 tickets including facilities available. Aural Spaces – Rest Within the Wake by James Allister Sprang (listening session)

Sat, Dec 14, 2024, 14:00
James Allister Sprang
James Allister Sprang creates a spatial sound experience that takes a dive into deep water, and creates a coherence between the physical, spiritual and historical meanings that are connected to it. A warm invitation to, in his own words, 'listen deeply as they welcome our bodies, our ancestors, our traumas, our pain, our desires, our visions and our dreams'.American audiovisual artist James Allister Sprang is a true pioneer in America in the field of 4DSound technology. He makes intriguing audiovisual installations and compositions, in which means such as photography, cyanotype and spatial audio technology move in harmony. His work is often inspired by Caribbean heritage and immigration, and explores themes of diaspora, displacement and survival. James begins the listening session with a somatic breathing exercise, emphasizing the interplay of breath, emotions and body sensations to begin the musical journey in a relaxed state. This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. From 12 to 15 December, a new dimension will be added to the live music experience in the Recital Hall of The Concertgebouw. Aural Spaces – Echo(location) Chamber by Evita Manji (listening session & Q&A)

Sun, Dec 15, 2024, 16:30
Evita Manji
This haunting soundtrack meditates on how the resonance of space and the rhythmic pulse of music intertwine, tethering the ephemeral to the profound. In this piece, the echo chamber transforms from a mere loop of repetition into a dynamic environment where soundwaves bounce and return, unveiling the contours of an emotional landscape concealed in the void. Echo(location) Chamber was composed and developed in January 2024, during their two week residency at MONOM.This listening session is co-presented by FIBER Festival. With their music and art, Greek producer and artist Evita Manji explores the environments where beauty and pain meet. Manji's work addresses universal themes such as free will and nature, but always brings feelings of hope and comfort into the equation. Their first album, Spandrel? tells a personal story about the grief they felt after the loss of their partner, the late producer SOPHIE. In addition to their music, Manji is also heavily involved in activism; with their label myxoxym, which raises money for the protection of nature in Greece.FIBER Festival is an Amsterdam-based festival and platform for contemporary digital culture, audiovisual art and progressive music culture.
