Antonín Dvořák's Stabat Mater is a product of personal tragedies: the death of his two-day-old daughter Josefa in 1875, followed by two more children in 1877. Dvořák, a devout man, found solace in composing this piece. Despite his publisher's doubts about its appeal outside Catholic countries, the Stabat Mater, frequently conducted by Dvořák himself, achieved international success.

Mozart: Great Mass in C minor / Jordi Savall

Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Le Concert des Nations, La Capella Nacional de Catalunya, Giulia Bolcato (Soprano), Elionor Martínez (Soprano), Lara Morger (Mezzo-Soprano), David Fischer (Tenor), Matthias Winckhler (Bass), Jordi Savall (Conductor)
It is considered one of the great unfinished works in the history of music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s »Great Mass« in C minor. He probably composed it following his wedding to singer Constanze Weber; unlike with his Requiem, at least Mozart’s death did not prevent the completion of the mass. Although remaining fragmentary, this outstanding mass setting is touching to this day due to its direct expressive power. With his Le Concert des Nations established in 1989, Catalan gambist, music researcher and conductor Jordi Savall had already often been a guest in Hamburg. As an expert in early music and historical performance practice, he consistently gives the audience new listening experiences – in particular with frequently played works. Because Savall is not only interested in music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, but he also elicits new aspects from the seemingly well-known classics. The ensemble and its conductor recently demonstrated this in 2021, for instance, with their Beethoven cycle; now, they tackle Mozart’s »Great Mass«.

The ensemble Les Accents, founded by baroque violinist Thibault Noally, delights audiences with its fresh and unconventional style of music-making, and is regarded as a leading ensemble on the early music scene. Leonardo García Alarcón conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Bach and Handel

Fri, Oct 11, 2024, 20:15
Concertgebouw Orchestra, Leonardo García Alarcón (Conductor), Andreas Wolf (Bass)
The Concertgebouw Orchestra takes flight in Baroque music when Leonardo García Alarcón is conducting. After his impressive first appearance in 2022, the charismatic Argentine conductor returns, weaving works by Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks into a festive whole, just as Bach himself would do on Friday evenings at Leipzig’s Café Zimmermann. Andreas Wolf’s rich, round bass is heard in a number of phenomenal arias from the secular cantatas (chamber operas) which Bach wrote in the same period. To celebrate the signing of the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, King George II organised a massive fireworks display. Despite it all going up in flames and the crowds fleeing, Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, written for the occasion, was an instant success and even saved the monarch’s reputation. Still very popular to this day, particularly for its well-loved second movement – the peaceful Air for strings – is Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite. Pure bliss!
