Mahler 6

Sat, Jan 18, 2025, 19:30
Cristian Măcelaru (Conductor), Dresdner Philharmonie
Gustav Mahler almost always composed based on his own mood. So one would expect that he wrote his Sixth Symphony in a rather somber mood, as it is called the "Tragic". But precisely in the summer of 1903, he was feeling great! Perhaps one should keep that in mind when listening to the many march-like sections of the work and the cowbells that remind one of carefree walks in the mountains. The music does have tragic elements, and with the hammer blows in the finale, we believe ourselves to be in a battle between the good and evil forces that determine our lives...

Listening Session with Marc Ribot

Sun, Nov 17, 2024, 15:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kaistudio 1 (Hamburg)
Marc Ribot (Talk), Tom R. Schulz (Moderator)
What kind of music does the guitarist Marc Ribot, who himself is such a versatile instrumentalist? His own stylistic spectrum – as immortalised on countless albums – ranges from jazz and rock to noise and punk. At the Listening Session, the Elbphilharmonie’s Kaistudio 1 is turned into a living room – a cosy setting in which Marc Ribot, as part of the festival dedicated to him, presents his favourite records that have influenced him and that continue to inspire him. Elbphilharmonie PLUS is a programme that opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the Elbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an experience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie+ programme, as do concert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and community centres.

Trumpeter Alison Balsom hailed Wynton Marsalis' trumpet concerto as the most significant in 200 years, surpassing even Hummel's in its diverse use of the trumpet's capabilities. The piece journeys through various classical and jazz styles. Inspired by spirituals and Native American music during his time in the US, Dvořák's 9th Symphony reflects a new world of possibilities and cultural diversity, becoming his greatest success.

Brandenburgische Konzerte 1–6

Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 19:00
Maurice Steger (Conductor), Maurice Steger (Blockflöte)
Bach's "Six Concerts with Several Instruments," better known as the Brandenburg Concertos, are neither solo concertos nor concerti grossi. Instead, they showcase the diverse ways instruments can interact. Maurice Steger, a recorder virtuoso, demonstrates the recorder's refined role in these pieces. The concert lasts approximately 125 minutes including intermission.
