Aural Spaces – Seeing with your Ears (listening session)

Sun, Dec 15, 2024, 14:30
Leroy de Böck (Actor), Sarah van Lamsweerde (Director), Hannes Wallrafen (Advice), 4DSOUND (Sound design)
The system goes beyond regular sound amplification and can bring both realistic and abstract sounds to life. In 4DSOUND, virtual sound objects seem to be really present inside of the space. The audience experiences more than just sound; people often indicate that they can actually 'see' the sounds. Especially with closed eyes, they can visualize the sounds thanks to the impressive properties of the sound system. With Seeing with your Ears, this phenomenon is taken one step further by working with visually impaired artists. They use 4DSOUND as an instrument to guide the audience through a sensory journey in space and time. Narrator Leroy de Böck takes you out of the here and now, to a variety of places and times. Listen attentively with your eyes closed and the images will come naturally. We happily invite people with a visual impairment, and sighted people are also welcome. The goal is to exchange experiences by listening to an entire world of spatial sound together.4DSOUND is an Amsterdam-based studio focusing on spatial sound as a creative medium. From 12 to 15 December, a new dimension will be added to the live music experience in the Recital Hall of The Concertgebouw. The familiar red plush chairs will make way for a 4DSOUND installation, consisting of 13 pillars with 41 speakers. Classical acoustic methods are combined with the modern technology of 4DSOUND, further expanding the possibilities of sound experience.Aural Spaces explores the boundaries between sound and space, blurring them and merging them. Aural Spaces – Masterclass James Allister Sprang & 4DSOUND: Play the Space as an Instrument

Fri, Dec 13, 2024, 10:30
James Allister Sprang, Poul Holleman
James Allister Sprang’s multidisciplinary work weaves in sculpture, visuals, and music, using sound to immerse audiences in a sonic cocoon that explores topics such as longing, nostalgia, disembodied voices, and representations of spirits unseen. His approach to spatial sound invites us to listen deeply while welcoming our own bodies, our ancestors, our traumas, our pain, our longings, visions, and dreams. During this talk, he will discuss his own journey in the spatial sound field, and his distinctive approach to creating in 4DSOUND.What are the possibilities of 4DSOUND? What are interesting ways to play the system? How can you apply 4DSOUND in different contexts? What else is sound spatialization besides placing and moving sounds? How does it work, and most importantly: how does it sound? Holleman and Sprang discuss the underlying concept and fundamental principles, with a strong focus on the system in action, because hearing is believing. This Masterclass is aimed at professionals and people from the field, but Aural Spaces also welcomes general interested parties who would like to be surprised by spatial sound. Please note: this masterclass is in English.4DSOUND is an Amsterdam-based studio focusing on spatial sound as a creative medium. Aural Spaces – Echo(location) Chamber by Evita Manji (listening session & Q&A)

Sun, Dec 15, 2024, 16:30
Evita Manji
This haunting soundtrack meditates on how the resonance of space and the rhythmic pulse of music intertwine, tethering the ephemeral to the profound. In this piece, the echo chamber transforms from a mere loop of repetition into a dynamic environment where soundwaves bounce and return, unveiling the contours of an emotional landscape concealed in the void. Echo(location) Chamber was composed and developed in January 2024, during their two week residency at MONOM.This listening session is co-presented by FIBER Festival. With their music and art, Greek producer and artist Evita Manji explores the environments where beauty and pain meet. Manji's work addresses universal themes such as free will and nature, but always brings feelings of hope and comfort into the equation. Their first album, Spandrel? tells a personal story about the grief they felt after the loss of their partner, the late producer SOPHIE. In addition to their music, Manji is also heavily involved in activism; with their label myxoxym, which raises money for the protection of nature in Greece.FIBER Festival is an Amsterdam-based festival and platform for contemporary digital culture, audiovisual art and progressive music culture. Through the lens of art, FIBER reflects on the ever-changing impact of technology on society and the planet. They explore these topics collectively through lectures, installation art, clubnights and by showing groundbreaking artistic processes to a broad audience. From 12 to 15 December, the music festival with 4DSOUND experience Aural Spaces returns to the Recital Hall of The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. With more than speakers spread throughout the empty historical concert hall, a unique 4-dimensional sound experience is created, using the space itself as an instrument. Fri, Dec 13, 2024, 14:30
Ruby Singh
Ruby Singh is a multi-faceted Vancouver-based artist who combines music, poetry, photography, and film. His work explores themes of mythology, memory, activism, and fantasy, and draws inspiration from the sounds of nature. Singh’s innovative projects include Vox.Infold, an a cappella ensemble and album project that transcends cultural boundaries by bringing together vocalists from diverse backgrounds. The immersive and ritualistic nature of this vocal piece makes it a perfect conduit for this Low Stimuli listening session. This piece was spatialized in 4DSOUND at Monom Studios.Musicians that performed on Vox.Infold II:Tiffany AyalikInuksuk MackayDawn PembertonRussell WallaceShamik BilgiTiffany MosesHussein JanmohamedDuring this listening session, the music is softer, the lights are less bright (dimmed) and the number of visitors is limited. This creates more space in the hall. The concert is during the day and the hall has been specially adapted for people who are sensitive to stimuli. Employees receive instructions on how to best support visitors. In addition, there is a quiet room that is accessible before, during and after the listening session. There is also a separate entrance and personal guidance is possible if desired.During Aural Spaces, the red plush chairs in the Recital Hall are replaced by a 4DSOUND installation. This allows you to sit or lie anywhere in the hall to enjoy the music. The audience can experience the music better due to fewer environmental stimuli. At the end of the session, there is silent applause with jazz hands. An extensive visual preparation and stimulus map will follow later. We would like to invite people who are sensitive to stimuli, but others who enjoy a quiet atmosphere are also welcome for a relaxing Friday afternoon. We ask everyone to take into account the etiquette of low stimuli. This listening session has been specially developed for people with stimulus sensitivity. James Allister Sprang
James Allister Sprang creates a spatial sound experience that takes a dive into deep water, and creates a coherence between the physical, spiritual and historical meanings that are connected to it. A warm invitation to, in his own words, 'listen deeply as they welcome our bodies, our ancestors, our traumas, our pain, our desires, our visions and our dreams'.American audiovisual artist James Allister Sprang is a true pioneer in America in the field of 4DSound technology. Listening Session with Marc Ribot

Sun, Nov 17, 2024, 15:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kaistudio 1 (Hamburg)
Marc Ribot (Talk), Tom R. Schulz (Moderator)
What kind of music does the guitarist Marc Ribot, who himself is such a versatile instrumentalist? His own stylistic spectrum – as immortalised on countless albums – ranges from jazz and rock to noise and punk. At the Listening Session, the Elbphilharmonie’s Kaistudio 1 is turned into a living room – a cosy setting in which Marc Ribot, as part of the festival dedicated to him, presents his favourite records that have influenced him and that continue to inspire him. Elbphilharmonie PLUS is a programme that opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the Elbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an experience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie+ programme, as do concert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and community centres.

Music as light as a feather

Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 19:30
Maciej Tomasiewicz (Conductor), Łukasz Zimnik (Flute), Karolina Stalmachowska (Oboe), Bartosz Pacan (Clarinet), Krzysztof Fiedukiewicz (Bassoon), Krzysztof Tomczyk (French horn), Tomasz Hajda (Trombone), Piotr Nowak (Trumpet), Michał Żymełka (Drums), Rafał Zambrzycki (Violin), Aleksander Daszkiewicz (Violin), Maria Shetty (Viola), Adam Krzeszowiec (Cello), Krzysztof Firlus (Double bass), Piotr Sałajczyk (Piano), Konrad Merta (Accordion)
Paul Hindemith is among the most underrated artists of the 20th century. Anyone who listens to his Kammermusik, op. 24 no. 1, a genuinely sparkling with ideas and light as a feather piece of music, will come to this conclusion. This architect of the cornerstone of historical performance and founding father of the famous Donaueschingen Contemporary Music Festival embodied the dominant ideals of the New Objectivity in German art of the 1920s, namely simplicity of means and communicativeness, in his Chamber Music series. It is a peculiar variety of neo-classicism, unjustly overshadowed by French or Russian music. The third movement in Kammermusik (op. 36 no. 3) is essentially a chamber cello concerto with explicit references to Baroque music. It is not without reason, after all, that this entire series has been compared to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. Surprisingly similar in its spirit tone, although referring to the classical form and not devoid of stronger emotional accents, is the Sinfonietta of the then-only 18-year-old Benjamin Britten, already heralding his extraordinary talent. Film: My Life as a Courgette

Sat, Mar 22, 2025, 15:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kaistudio 1 (Hamburg)
The film »Ma vie de Courgette« (My Life as a Courgette) about little Icare begins in the dreariness of a failed family. It turns into an impressive story about a child’s ability to create substitute families. It is not least the light-hearted soundtrack by Sophie Hunger that gives the film its life-affirming atmosphere. Swiss animation filmmaker Claude Barras is known for his affectionate characterisation using stop-motion techniques. For »My Life as a Courgette«, he adapted a novel by Gilles Paris; the screenplay was written by French director Céline Sciamma. The orphanage drama about the power of childhood friendship premiered in Cannes in 2016 and was showered with awards. In her soundtrack, Sophie Hunger combines her love of rock music and sound experiments to create an atmospheric framework that perfectly accompanies the film. Sophie Hunger wrote her first film score for »The Friend« by Swiss director Micha Lewinski back in 2008. She has since worked on various soundtracks and was honoured with the »Des Notes et des Toiles« prize at the French festival and the German Television Award.
