First performed in 1796, the vocal version is one of the most popular pieces of Passion music. Beforehand, writer Navid Kermani will read from his highly acclaimed, intelligent and poetic book “Unbelieving Amazement. On Christianity”. In it, the winner of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade “immerses himself in the world of Christian imagery and marvels at a religion full of sacrifice and lamentation, love and miracles.”
