30 Years of Mnozil Brass

Fri, Apr 12, 2024, 13:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Thomas Gansch (Trumpet), Thomas Gansch (Flugelhorn), Robert Rother (Trumpet), Robert Rother (Flugelhorn), Roman Rindberger (Trumpet), Roman Rindberger (Flugelhorn), Gerhard Füssl (Trumpet), Leonhard Paul (Trombone), Leonhard Paul (Bass trumpet), Zoltán Kiss (Tenor trombone), Zoltán Kiss (Alto trombone), Wilfried Brandstötter (F-tuba)
It is now 30 years since a few cheeky music students with the ambition of a career as orchestral musicians gave in to the temptations of pub music at the Mnozil Inn in Vienna and thus made their unplanned way into the entertainment business. They left the noble world of classical music behind them and travelled the globe with brass show tunes and hits. Success came quickly and the inevitable happened: the decades flew by and students eventually became professors themselves. But the fire of blown music never goes out! It still burns brightly in their hearts in 2023, just like back then, in the small Viennese pub. And that’s why Mnozil Brass is once again setting out for new shores and presenting the ultimate brass birthday in the form of an anniversary show: »Jubelei! – 30 Years of Mnozil Brass. Happy Birthday to Us!«

With fantastic younger musicians added to the line-up, the collective creates its usually unusual homage to its founding members, staying true to its roots and yet always with its finger on the pulse. »From Ancient to the Future« was the band’s motto right from the start and it speaks volumes about their musical positioning – not only in contemporary jazz, but when it comes to old musical traditions and new music as well. The album »The Sixth Decade – from Paris to Paris« was recorded in 2020 at the Parisian festival »Sons d’Hiver«, thus also paying homage to the place where it all began. The Guardian writes about the interplay between the old and new guard: » It’s heartwarming to hear the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s devoted heirs so ready to carry the story on.«

World The voices of Persia

Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Hossein Alizadeh & Hamavayan Ensemble (Ethno folk ensemble), Zohre Gholipour (Vocals), Parisa Pooladian (Rubab), Saba Alizadeh (Kamāncheh), Mehdi Emami (Vocals), Houshmand Ebadi (Ney), Ali Boustan (Setar), Hossein Alizadeh (Tar), Hossein Alizadeh (Composition), Behnam Samani (Daf), Behnam Samani (Tombak)
Hossein Alizadeh is a musical legend in his native Iran. He plays the Persian long-necked lute tār with unmatched virtuosity. Yet the musician is not a traditionalist. Though his playing is rooted in the traditional music of his country, his performances bring it into the here and now. For example, he has developed a new instrument from the traditional setar: the shourangiz, whose name means “to give passion”. With the two singers Zohre Gholipour and Mehdi Emami, we also hear two of Iran’s most important musical voices.
