Chanukah, the festival of lights, is an ancient Jewish holiday. This year we are also proud to celebrate our 10th Anniversary Concert. Together with the Jewish Community of Amsterdam, we will celebrate the fourth night of Chanukah by jointly lighting the Chanukia (traditional eight armed candelabra) on the stage of The Concertgebouw. We’ve put together a special program made up of highlights from our previous nine concerts – which will appeal to both a Jewish and non-Jewish audience. Everyone is welcome to attend.Once again, we warmly welcome Chief-Cantor Chaim Stern to the stage, captivating us with his breathtaking voice. In celebration of this 10th Anniversary concert, we are honored to present the world-renowned Shuly Nathan, performing her iconic rendition of "Jerusalem of Gold." The Jewish Amsterdam Chamber Ensemble will offer a diverse program, featuring Jewish, Israeli, classical, and contemporary music. We are also pleased to have Barry Mehler return as Musical Director, with Leo Samama as concert patron. At our concert you’ll enjoy more than just music. Everyone will be treated to a special Chanukah delicacy “sufganiot” (jelly doughnuts) and kosher wine – all included in the ticket price. This concert is made possible, in part, by a donation from the Maror Foundation.

Anniversary concert 15 years JeKi (an instrument for every child)

Wed, May 21, 2025, 18:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Schüler:innen und Lehrkräfte aus Hamburger JeKi-Schulen, Blechbläser-Ensemble der Jugendmusikschule Hamburg, Jubiläums-Band
Over the past 15 years, the Ministry of Schools and Vocational Training has opened this door for 50,000 primary school children in 69 schools in Hamburg: from getting to know the instruments for the first time and trying out how to produce sound, to weekly lessons in small groups and presentations at school and beyond, the JeKi children have immersed themselves in the world of instrumental playing. As with seasoned musicians, listening, imitating, trying things out, helping each other, showing, practising, playing together, extra rehearsals and performing have become part of their lives. JeKi enables all children to take part, regardless of their family background, because it is free of charge. This gives every child in the JeKi schools the chance to climb the first steps on an instrument of their choice. 15 years of JeKi are truly a reason to be proud and to celebrate in style, and the Laeiszhalle provides the festive setting. The varied programme includes songs and pieces from different genres, which are presented by individual JeKi groups or jointly by the anniversary orchestra across schools.

100 years of BDLO Federal Association of Amateur Music Symphony and Chamber Orchestras

Sun, May 19, 2024, 19:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Projektorchester (Consisting of the leading members of North German amateur orchestras), Projektchor (Compiled in cooperation with the Gustav Mahler Vereinigung Hamburg), Freja Sandkamm (Soprano), Dorothee Bienert (Mezzo-Soprano), Wolf Tobias Maximilian Müller (Conductor)
The State Association of North German Amateur Orchestras celebrates the 100th anniversary of the BDLO Federal Association of Amateur Music Symphony and Chamber Orchestras with Mahler’s »Resurrection Symphony«. To this day, performances of Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony are an impressive event - not only in Hamburg, where the composer once had the inspiration for the choral finale in the Michel. Together, the Gustav Mahler Association Hamburg, which has set itself the task of raising public awareness of the composer and the traditional music association, founded a project orchestra and choir especially for this concert, bringing the work of the century to the Laeiszhalle to mark the anniversary.
