Selfie in the Dark

Für ihn ist Komponieren eine Art Medikament gegen die Gewalt des Lebens. Georges Aperghis ist »eine unverwechselbare Stimme und ein herausragender Komponist unserer Zeit«, so die Würdigung der Ernst-von-Siemens-Musikstiftung. Bei »Selfie in the Dark« handelt es sich um einen Kompositionsauftrag des Festivals, der hier zur Uraufführung kommt – und dass der Aperghis in Erinnerung an seine verstorbene Frau Edith komponiert hat. Auf der Suche nach dem Klang der Stille hingegen komponierte Eivind Buene 2017 im norwegischen Winter »Lessons in Darkness« und imaginierte dabei das Ensemble als menschliche Gemeinschaft. In the 1960s, choreographer Merce Cunningham dreamed of electronically notating dance. Composer Roman Pfeifer, inspired by this vision, created the transdisciplinary piece "drawing a straight line in a curved universe." He applied computer-generated dance technologies to music, presenting new possibilities and challenges for the Kammerelektronik ensemble, which Pfeifer founded to connect sound, instrumental gesture, light, space, and dance.

120 years of Hamburger Orchestergemeinschaft

As Hamburg’s oldest amateur symphony orchestra, the Hamburger Orchestergemeinschaft from 1904 organises at least two concerts a year. Time and again, the orchestra gives young, very talented conductors and soloists the opportunity to gain experience with public performances in large concert halls. For the anniversary concert, the orchestra under the direction of Wolf Tobias M. Müller showcases its musical breadth with a colourful bouquet of overtures and arias from Mozart to Puccini as well as Schubert’s »Unfinished« Symphony. To celebrate the anniversiary, a new percussion concerto by Fredrik Schwenk will be premiered.

Ensemble Resonanz / Abel Selaocoe / Saerom Park

South African cellist Abel Selaocoe redefines the parameters of the cello and combines virtuoso skills with improvisation, singing and body percussion. He has found an ideal ally in Ensemble Resonanz, which also enthusiastically explores innovative and new paths in its concerts, sometimes as the Ensemble in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and sometimes in the chamber music club it founded itself in the Hamburg district of St Pauli. Together they move through worlds, genres and eras – until they arrive together in the future. In »Silent Woods« by Antonín Dvořák, the leaves rustle in the wind with four celli. »When We Were Trees« by Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima takes us through the seasons in a true sound adventure with a mix of different styles – sometimes classical, sometimes folkloristic, sometimes percussive, sometimes meditative. Kate Moore contributes a new composition for cello and Selaocoe’s voice.

Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor / Dresdner Festspielorchester / Hansjörg Albrecht

Bach, Bach, Bach ... Johann Sebastian Bach was a master of pastiche: he loved to reuse his own compositions in new contexts and to copy his pieces in order to demonstrate their flexibility and universality and to give them new expression. With the Lukas-Passion, we hear a work in precisely this pastiche manner. Bach never managed to finish writing this Passion. Now the Bach specialists Lorenz and Christoph Eglhuber, together with the renowned conductor Hansjörg Albrecht, have gone into Bach’s copying and composing room to write this missing Passion from his own compositions. The result is a highly exciting, dramatic work – from pieces written by Bach himself. The Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg brings it to the stage with the finest cast. The soloists are all absolute Bach experts. The Dresdner Festspielorchester is an orchestra made up of members of top-class ensembles of period performance practice. The audience can expect a festive baroque concert in the Passion season!

"Wenn Du mich hörst ..."

The Studio Musikfabrik was an ideal ensemble for composer Peter Eötvös. It guides young, pre-college musicians in performing contemporary music. The program includes a commissioned work by Ioannis Mitsialis, Orestis Papaioannou's "dream\breathe" quartet (referencing Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream"), Zeynep Toraman's energetic "Epokhe," and Zeynep Gedizlioglu's mini-drama "Wenn Du mich hörst, klopf zweimal" for soprano and string quartet.

WDR Sinfonie­orchester "mein Fleisch"

Nicolaus A. Huber will celebrate his 85th birthday on December 15, 2024. The NOW! Festival sends him birthday greetings in advance. Huber, a native of Lower Bavaria, left a huge mark on Essen as a composition professor at the Folkwang University from 1974 to 2004. His former student, Gordon Kampe, composed a commissioned work for two voices and orchestra. Johannes Maria Staud's new percussion concerto and two Huber classics will be performed. In 2017, he composed "...der arabischen 4", and with "laissez vibrer", he composed the first solo for 18 tubular bells, reminiscent of his childhood.
