»Die musikalische Reise vom Pinguin Gu«

Gu the penguin just finds it far too boring at the South Pole: standing in the cold all day long, pressed up close to the other penguins so he doesn’t freeze – and nothing but ice everywhere... Nothing happens. One day, a ship passes by the South Pole and Gu immediately sneaks off to get on the ship. When his best friend Pi realises this, she hops on board – and together they set off on a trip around the world. On their journey, they get to know lots of people and lots of music, and it sounds different in every country.

„Vom blauen Himmel“ (Mongolei)

You can experience the Mongolian ensemble in two concerts with different programs. The originality of the landscapes and the endless expanses of nature become tangible and are reminiscent of the stories of Genghis Khan and his horsemen. The overtone singing of the men (Chöömi), which has its origins in the shaman tradition in the Altai Mountains and impresses with its touching tonality, originated in Mongolia. The women's Urtiin Du chant was created as a powerful dialog with the holy blue sky in the solitude of the overwhelming, aristocratic silence of the Gobi Desert. Let yourself be intoxicated and grounded by this musical dialog with nature!

Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice

To bring his beloved Eurydice back to life, Orpheus moved even the underworld gods with his singing. Cecilia Bartoli embodies Orpheus in Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, revised in 1769. The title role was transposed to brilliant heights, a feast for Bartoli and soprano Mélissa Petit as Eurydice and Amor.

With a voice whose beauty, range and agility seem to know no bounds, Cecilia Bartoli is one of the undisputed world leaders in singing. She also has an almost magnetic stage presence and a charisma that not only thrills classical music fans. No wonder she enjoys a legendary reputation, especially on the opera stage. In addition to Bartoli’s stage career, the mezzo-soprano also devotes herself time and again to special projects. She brings one of these to the Elbphilharmonie for ProArte: Christoph Willibald Gluck’s grandiose opera »Orfeo ed Euridice« in a rarely performed later version. At her side: the Musiciens du Prince of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo under the direction of Gianluca Capuano and the outstanding choir Il Canto di Orfeo. A feast for the eyes and ears guaranteed!

Cecilia Bartoli Gluck "Orfeo ed Euridice"

In the 1769 Parma version of "Orfeo ed Euridice", Gluck offers no happy ending for Orpheus's journey to the underworld. World star Cecilia Bartoli, the captivating tragic heroine, comments, "So fate cannot be tricked." Her 2023 Salzburg Pfingstfestspiele performance, enriched with pieces from other versions, remains powerful in this concert format. Gianluca Capuano and "Les Musiciens du Prince" play historical instruments with breathtaking passion.

Gluck: Iphigénie en Tauride / Thomas Hengelbrock

Christoph Willibald Gluck wanted his operatic music to be entirely focused on the gripping depiction of the plot. In the process, he revolutionised the overly long, extravagant baroque models. He set the ancient subject matter of »Iphigénie en Tauride« – a bloodthirsty family tragedy – to music, with finely rendered character studies that portray in gripping ways their personal inner conflicts in beautiful arias. It is an ideal template for Thomas Hengelbrock and his ensembles, who have long been a fixture in European musical life with their synthesis of historically informed interpretations and high-energy music-making. He has invited one of the most moving soprano voices of our time to Hamburg for the starring role in this opera-themed concert: Gaëlle Arquez, who last dazzled as Carmen in the Elbphilharmonie. The plot offers her and the other singers ample opportunity to perform across the full range of emotions. King Agamemnon was once prepared to sacrifice his daughter Iphigénie to the goddess Diana to win the war against Troy. In return, his wife Clytemnestra kills him on his return and their son Orest avenges his father by killing his mother. Diana, however, rescued Iphigénie at the last moment and took her to the island of Tauris as her priestess. This is where Orest comes to escape from the goddesses of revenge who torment him. Iphigénie, who is supposed to sacrifice all strangers on the island to Diana, recognises her brother and, overwhelmed with forgiveness, brings the spiral of violence to an end.

Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and Les Musiciens du Prince - Monaco, of which she is artistic director, present the Italian version of Gluck’s 1769 Orfeo. Their staged production of the opera, presented here in concert form, was acclaimed at the Salzburg Festival in 2023.

For the lead role in his concert performance of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s captivating opera »Iphigénie en Tauride«, he has invited one of today’s most moving soprano voices to come to Hamburg: Carolina López Moreno. Gluck turned against the virtuoso excesses of Baroque opera with pared-down works concentrating on an absorbing depiction of the plot. He used the classical story of »Iphigénie en Tauride« for finely-drawn character studies that call for a high level of differentiation from all members of the cast. An ideal piece for Hengelbrock to work his magic on. Together with his top-class Balthasar Neumann ensembles and an excellent soloists’ line-up, he makes the audience’s hearts beat faster with superb playing and singing, and intense drama.

Die Absolventen

rbb's Radio3 relaunches its live series "Die Absolventen" in the rbb rooftop lounge. The show features promising students from the Eisler and Berlin University of the Arts with their professors.
