Keine Frage, wenn Richard Strauss selbst eine Speisekarte vertonen könnte, warum nicht auch mal… die Alpen! Die sind natürlich ein deutlich raumgreifenderes Objekt als ein Menü, aber auch das war für den nie um einen humorigen Spruch verlegenen Strauss kein Problem. Während der reife Strauss für seine Alpensinfonie aus dem Vollen schöpft und so ziemlich alles aufbietet, was in einem modernen Orchester Verwendung finden kann, zeigt der noch junge Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy mit seiner Ouvertüre Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt, dass er Naturgewalten auch eine Nummer kleiner, aber nicht weniger eindrucksvoll zu schildern vermag – inklusive Happy End. Mit Dmitrij Schostakowitschs zweitem Klavierkonzert steht darüber hinaus ein Spätwerk des Komponisten mit geradezu jugendlich ansteckendem Charme auf dem Programm. Am Dirigentenpult gibt es ein Wiedersehen mit dem Bremer Ulf Schirmer, der weltweit zu den gefragtesten Dirigenten gehört, sich seiner Heimat und den Philharmonikern aber immer noch eng verbunden fühlt.
