Iris ter Schiphorst's opera for children was premiered in Vienna in 2010. Together with her librettist Helga Utz, the Hamburg-born composer created a touching and captivatingly imaginative work of music theater from the Grimm fairy tale. A princess, accompanied by her maid, sets off from the protection of her parental home to meet her bridegroom. Despite a difficult journey and numerous obstacles, everything turns out well in the end and she is able to marry her prince. Tobias Kratzer is staging Die Gänsemagd as part of the opening of the opera stabile's artistic direction and season one day after Das Paradies und die Peri, the opening production on the main stage. Musical theater for the youngest generations is not a niche product for him, but a top priority. Here, young audiences experience it at close quarters: As a flock of geese, the children become part of the action, immersing themselves in the story together with the musicians and ensemble singers - opera as a lively, accessible art form full of enchanting melodies that shows how valuable resilience, self-confidence and trust in others are on the journey through life. Musical direction: Claudia Chan Production: Tobias Kratzer Co-director: Matthias Piro Stage and costumes: Rainer Sellmaier Dramaturgy: Michelle Stoop Opera for children (2009) Libretto: Helga Utz based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm

Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank

Tue, May 6, 2025, 11:00
Volker Krafft (Musical Director), Olivia Warburton (Anne Frank), Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg (Orchestra)
Everything seems to have been said about them, books have been written, films made, podcasts produced, facts collected upon facts. And yet there remains a void into which all the facts and words cannot penetrate - but the music can. In his composition, Grigori Frid approaches the inner states of Anne Frank, traces her longings and fears, and thus echoes the great literary power of Anne Frank's words. He creates a sensualization of the situation and thus a strong possibility of identification for young people today. After the White Rose, this graphic opera is dedicated to another iconic figure and victim of the Nazi dictatorship: Anne Frank. Digital and handmade, with comic, film, gore and poetry, documentary and fantastic, telling history and stories differently. For the truth behind reality! Production: David Bösch Setsund costume: Patrick Bannwart Video: Falko Herold Dramaturgy: Janina Zell, Michael Sangkuhl Music theater pedagogy: Maura Kopschitz

CHRISTOPH MARTHALER MEETS GUSTAV MAHLER - TWO GRAND MASTERS RETURN TO THE STAATSOPER HAMBURG Gustav Mahler - star conductor, visionary composer, Hamburg resident by choice. And also: a restless artist who struggled with himself, a “restless one”, as his wife and Viennese icon Alma characterized him. A panorama of human experience unfolds in his music - always oscillating between joie de vivre and dance of death. To mark its 350th anniversary year, the Hamburg State Opera is dedicating special projects to the works of its creative former general music directors and artistic directors and is celebrating the most famous of them at the start of this series. The director Christoph Marthaler, known for his unconventional and playful scenic collages, approaches Mahler's oeuvre in an unusual evening of music theater. This artistic encounter explores the nuances of the composer's songs and instrumental music, interpreted in experimental arrangements by an ensemble of singers, actors and musicians. Following his acclaimed Lulu from 2017, Marthaler now brings this production close to the audience - as an intense chamber play in the opera stabile. Musical direction and arrangement: Johannes Harneit Production: Christoph Marthaler Stage: Duri Bischoff Costumes: Sara Kittelmann Dramaturgy: Malte Ubenauf, Judith Wiemers An evening at low volume Music theater by Christoph Marthaler with compositions by Gustav Mahler
