Following his acclaimed appearance in a Young Singers Concert during last season’s Schubert Week, baritone Gerrit Illenberger returns to perform his first full recital at the Pierre Boulez Saal. He is joined by Gerold Huber, the longtime artistic partner of Illenberger’s teacher Christian Gerhaher. Together they present a musical portrait of fin-de-siècle Vienna and Paris through Debussy's settings of Paul Verlaine and Stéphane Mallarmé, Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer, and Schoenberg's rarely heard and highly Romantic Op. 1, as well as songs by Johannes Brahms.

Conductor Tugan Sokhiev places this work alongside Lili Boulanger’s impressionistic, shimmering D’un matin de printemps and a newly-composed viola concerto by South Korean composer Donghoon Shin – also an admirer of Mahler. The solo part of the world premiere will be played by Amihai Grosz, first principal viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker.

It was Johannes Brahms who first honoured the youngest member of the woodwind section as „Fräulein Klarinette“, for whom he wrote wonderful chamber music late in life. However, Franz Schubert and Louis Spohr had already tapped into the clarinet's feminine side before that, writing intimate duets for it and the soprano, to which only the piano, which was obligatory in the bourgeois salon, was allowed to join in with the harmony. Our principal clarinettist Ralf Forster invites you into the Kleine Saal to indulge in the intimate house music atmosphere of a Schubertiade just before Christmas that reaches far beyond the composer's time.

When Felix Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny died unexpectedly in 1847, the composer confessed to feeling “the greatest emptiness and barrenness in my mind and heart.” He poured his grief into his F-minor String Quartet, which was to remain the last quartet he completed before passing away himself just a few months later. The Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet combines this instrumental requiem with Gustav Mahler’s Rückert Songs—works that also talk about love and leave-taking—in an arrangement by Swiss composer David Philip Hefti, with Mojca Erdmann as the soloist. The songs will be interspersed with the individual movements of Hefti’s Sixth String Quartet, Fünf Szenen für Gustav. Schubert’s youthful G-minor Quartet, written when the composer was just 18 years old, completes the program.

In the evening at the bar, someone tells great stories: Adventure, drama, entanglement, love, wisdom, humour. The radioeins storytelling lounge has been creating exactly this situation since 2023. The actress and author Meike Rötzer tells in her own words what she has gleaned from the most productive of all. The radioeins storytelling lounge now becomes a radioeins storytelling concert thanks to the RSB! The literary radio format takes to the live stage, musically enhanced by the large symphony orchestra and suitable works from Gustav Mahler to Maria Herz (!). Thomas Mann’s cult novel “The Magic Mountain” is itself an invitation.The event takes about 3 hours including a break.

Zur neuen Spielzeit bringt James Gaffigan ein Stück seiner Heimat New York mit an die Komische Oper Berlin! Während unser Generalmusikdirektor hier eine Wahlheimat gefunden hat, steuerte im 20. Jahrhundert so manch prominenter europäischer Komponist den sicheren Hafen Amerika an. Für Antonín Dvořák und Gustav Mahler eröffnete New York einflussreiche berufliche Möglichkeiten. Kurt Weill befasste sich am Broadway mit dem aufstrebenden Musical. Erich Wolfgang Korngold setzte in Hollywood wiederum den Grundstein für das Filmmusikgenre und inspirierte durch seine Soundtracks nicht zuletzt Filmmusiklegende John Williams. Auf den amerikanischen Erfolg hatten zweifelsohne nicht nur die Komponisten, sondern auch ihre Begleiterinnen einen Einfluss. Ensemblesängerin Susan Zarrabi verleiht den Frauen in Kurt-Weill-Songs aus One Touch of Venus und Lost in the stars eine unvergleichliche Stimme. Schauspielerin Evamaria Salcher gibt zudem amüsante Einblicke in das Leben von Lotte Lenya bis hin zu Alma Mahler. Von Dvořáks schwelgerischer »American Suite« bis zum Weltschmerz in Mahlers 10. For the second time in a row, the Konzerthausorchester and chief conductor Joana Mallwitz will be guests at the Musikfest. The solo parts in both works on the programme will be sung by the French-Cypriot soprano Sarah Aristidou, who has made a name for herself particularly in the field of contemporary music. In 1971, composer Luigi Nono met with artists and politicians in Chile, including Luciano Cruz Aguayo, one of the leaders of the Revolutionary Left. Back in Italy, he learnt of the young man's accidental death. Nono then composed a kind of ‘secular requiem’ for the activist, which was intended not only to convey grief but also the motivation to continue his social struggle. To this end, the composer set a memorial poem by Julio Huasi to Luciano, which was also given the title ‘Como una ola de fuerza y luz’ (Like a wave of strength and light). Among Mahler's symphonies, No. 4 is comparatively straightforward in terms of instrumentation and length. There is ‘much laughter’ in it, the composer assured us in a letter after its completion in 1901. However, the feeling that hilarity and horror exist side by side and that the idyll is not to be trusted creeps in as soon as the retuned solo violin plays in the second movement. And if you listen very carefully to the text of the ambiguous Wunderhorn song ‘Das himmlische Leben’, you will learn that, at least for the ox and lamb, heaven in the land of milk and honey is not full of violins, as a German saying goes.

Many people consider Julian Prégardien a Frenchman, but in fact he comes from a clan of tenors from Frankfurt. He first sang to praise the Lord as a choirboy; as a teenager, he was crazy about the rock band Nirvana. But he ultimately could not escape the family genes: a Berliner by choice, he has become a modern singer with a melts-in-your-mouth tenor voice. At the Musikfest Berlin he will transform into Mahler’s wayfarer in love, yearning for the »blue eyes of my beloved«, as it says in one of the songs.

Antonello Manacorda and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra open our International Chamber Orchestra series with music from the “New World”. Anton Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony, written in New York, clearly expresses the influences of both indigenous and African American melodies – although the work is also unmistakably Bohemian in colour. 2024 marks the 150th birthday of the brilliant Charles Ives, the first American composer to gain truly global recognition. Anna Prohaska sings selected songs by Ives, juxtaposed with songs by Gustav Mahler, his European contemporary.

Hush is the final work of composer Kaija Saariaho, that could only be premiered after her death in 2023 – yet movingly resonates with life.
