Sicilian singer-songwriter Pippo Pollina is bringing a very special project to the stage in 2025. Together with the symphony orchestra of the Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich (MKZ), he will perform his musical repertoire from over 40 years in a very special setting. This project will fuse different styles of the 20th century: the ethnic influences of Béla Bartók, the Latin American colourings of Astor Piazzolla and the epic narrative art of the Italian composer Ennio Morricone. Under the direction of the Swiss-French maestro David Bruchez and with orchestral arrangements by Massimiliano Matesic and Juan Esteban Cuacci, the Swiss Youth Orchestra becomes a perfect symbiosis to reinterpret Pollina’s varied songs in part and reproduce them in the best possible way.

From the Westphalian province to rock star – this dream came true for Bertram Engel in 1976 when Udo Lindenberg signed the then 17-year-old for the legendary Panikorchester. A few years later, another superstar of German rock music, Peter Maffay, hired him as a permanent band member. Bertram Engel has now been in the spotlight with the two for almost five decades, sharing unique moments and destinies with them on and off stage. As a drummer, he is the pulse that drives and holds the band together. In his book, Engel tells of his exciting life as a rock musician, full of unrivalled anecdotes about the stars he has performed with. At the Laeiszhalle, Bertram Engel not only reads from the book, but also plays songs he wrote for Peter Maffay and Udo Lindenberg.

Sebastian Studnitzky’s project »Memento Odesa« is a modern-classical homage to the city of Odesa and its inhabitants in the midst of the Russian war of aggression. ECHO Jazz and OPUS Klassik prizewinner Sebastian Studnitzky has close ties to Ukraine and has already been invited to perform there on various occasions. In July 2023, he flew to Odesa to record his music in the Philharmonic Hall with the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Volodymyr Dikiy. The aim of this recording was to raise awareness and donations for the people of Ukraine by releasing the songs and accompanying music videos. In March 2024, the 22-piece chamber orchestra of the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra successfully toured Germany. However, the tour opened in the sold-out Philharmonic Hall in Odesa at a time when Russian drone attacks on the city were causing fear, devastation and suffering almost every night. The following tour in Germany culminated in a concert in the completely sold-out Memorial Church in Berlin. Sebastian Studnitzky’s project also emphasises the responsibility of artists to use their talent and platforms in a meaningful way. The proceeds from the concerts are donated to local aid organisations in Ukraine.

The year 2024 is a special year for the band Nits. The »Nits50« anniversary tour will take the band to the European cities that have played a major role in their career. Paris, Zurich, Antwerp, Brussels, Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Helsinki and, of course, Amsterdam. The concert will be a journey through their history, but also an introduction to new songs. The mini-album »Tree House Fire« was released before the tour. The central theme of the six new songs is the fire that completely destroyed the band’s Amsterdam studio in 2022.

All the things this woman can do! Floriana Cangiano, FLO for short, is a songwriter, singer, author and actress. As one of the most versatile artists in Italy, this Neapolitan lady is showcasing a packed programme as a trio with »Canzone di sale«. After singing studies and theatre productions, FLO gave the world her first album in 2014 and revealed a musical cosmos in which she exuberantly linked canzone and chanson, pop and Latin, jazz and folk. Her sonic and poetic influences range, besides the world of southern Italy, from Billie Holiday via Cesaria Evora to Frida Kahlo and Pablo Neruda. FLO is a specialist in little everyday stories, which she tells with passion and enigmatic flavour – and always from a strong female perspective. In the trio with the guitarist Federico Luongo and the multi-instrumentalist Francesco Di Cristofaro (bouzouki, accordion, flutes), she tells of love, courage and fate sometimes wistfully, sometimes wryly, then again dramatically. Her two companions create an onomatopoeic setting which carries you off into Mediterranean skies and scents.

His songs reflect what the Viennese feel: in nonchalant style, Nino from Vienna has made dialect singing socially acceptable again, and has transported the Viennese song from traditional taverns to the trendy club scene. Not only has he accumulated a large fan base, he has also become a role model for many successful Austrian musicians who are now breathing new life into the genre. He just proved this in spring 2024 as part of »Die Besten aus Wien«, when André Heller brought together the who’s who of this lively scene on the Elbphilharmonie stage. Now Nino from Vienna is back in Hamburg with his new album »endlich Wienerlieder«. The album is dedicated to his grandfather, a Wienerlied singer, and pays homage to great traditions. As charming as ever, he sings about »the entire universe of human existence. As different as these songs are, they all show a lot of feeling: Nino, it seems, doesn’t give a shit. He just does it. And the result is usually good« (Die ZEIT). He never pretends to be something he isn’t. His stage name is the best example: Nino Mandl, who grew up on the outskirts of the Austrian capital, is Der Nino aus Wien: Nino from Vienna. Someone who sings about the banalities of everyday life and turns them into great music – simply and authentically, without ever exaggerating.

The Dubliners were one of the most famous and influential of Irish folk bands – and that over a period of 50 years. After Barney McKenna, the last of the original four 1962 founding members, died in spring 2012, John Sheahan announced that The Dubliners were disbanding. And that’s where the story might have ended. But, as is so often the case with legends, they are never forgotten, they never really break up, they never disappear. In the case of The Dubliners, they simply found a new name. Since 2013, they have been known, appropriately, as »The Dublin Legends«, and have set out to conquer the world of Irish folk anew under a different name.

The Pink Floyd tribute band Brit Floyd returns to German stages in 2024 with »P-U-L-S-E«. »P-U-L-S-E« is their biggest and most spectacular production to date, celebrating Pink Floyd’s legendary last »Division Bell« tour and performing it true to the original – including a breathtaking laser and light show, iconic round screen, inflatable objects and theatrics. The show, which lasts more than two and a half hours, will feature classics from Pink Floyd’s magnificent album catalogue, including »Dark Side of the Moon«, »The Wall«, »Wish You Were Here«, »Animals«, »The Division Bell«, »Meddle« and others. In 1994, Pink Floyd’s »Division Bell« tour was the biggest-selling tour in the history of rock music, with over 5 million spectators in 68 cities. The tour proved to be an epic finale and a remarkable footnote to one of the most influential rock bands in history.

The title of the album Miss Italia« refers to the longing for Italy and the romantic idea of rediscovering one’s roots. »I want to portray the Italy I know and discover what I don’t yet know so that I can tell it to others,« explains Jack Savoretti. With a raw, passionate and poignant voice, Jack Savoretti leaves all judgement aside and fuses Anglo-Saxon with Italian singer-songwriting to create his unique sound. The album came at an important time in Jack’s life, as his Italian father had recently passed away. Jack explains: »My father was the anchor that connected me to Italy, the link to my roots that I was in danger of losing without him. So I went back to school. I didn’t want to imitate Italian music, I wanted to make it my own, combining everything I’d learnt in almost 20 years of experience working in America, England and Italy, fusing Anglo-Saxon singer-songwriting with Italian to create something unique. I had to learn to write in Italian before I could make my album in Italian.« Jack Savoretti enjoys a reputation as an outstanding singer-songwriter. The list of his collaborators reads like a who’s who of the music scene. They include international greats such as Bob Dylan, Kylie Minogue, Shania Twain, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Nile Rodgers, to name but a few. He is a master at channelling his musical roots, which lie both in the singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s in California and in European chansonniers such as Charles Aznavour and Lucio Battisti. However, despite being bilingual from birth, writing in Italian was new territory for an artist who has produced and sold millions of albums for over sixteen years and released seven albums in that time, two of which have reached number one in the UK album charts – Singing To Strangers in 2019 and his most recent release Europiana in 2021.

Interpol are coming back to Germany for the 20th anniversary of »Antics«. Interpol shoulder the heavy cross of their second album with surprising ease. »Antics« is a worthy successor to the justifiably highly praised debut »Turn On The Bright Lights«, the common thread of which is picked up again and the influences reaching back to the late seventies and early eighties can once again be clearly heard. But now please don’t shout retro rock and new wave revival again, because what can the four studious guys from the eternally bubbling New York melting pot do for the fact that they were still in nappies when punk and wave were raging back then? Like Radio 4 or The Faint, Interpol have internalised the spirit of that time and continue its sound with other means. Interpol sound very English again when they play their ten dark songs – heavily infected by The Sound, Joy Division or Chameleons. On »Antics«, the men, always elegantly dressed like The Godfathers of old, know how to develop melodies, slow down or pick up the tempo and elicit chords from the guitars that have not been heard for a long time. The highlight of the album is perhaps »Slow Hands« with fast, dry riffs that even Franz Ferdinand couldn’t have managed better. An album that is one of the highlights of 2004, a year not exactly lacking in highlights thanks to Radio 4, Franz Ferdinand, Wilco, Modest Mouse or Liars.

Melancholy can be so beautiful! The indie folk pop of Amber & the Moon combines the gentle voice of lead singer Ronja Pöhlmann with acoustic arrangements of captivating fragility. Celestial and mysterious, the songs of their debut album »Things We’ve Got in Common« recount life with its ups and downs. Ronja herself describes it as »a warm blanket for the cold season which gives you comfort«. The best programme for a (probably rainy) autumn evening at the Elbphilharmonie! Amber & the Moon started as a solo project by Ronja Pöhlmann. In Jonathan Riedel, she got to know a versatile comrade-in-arms, who not only adds bass guitar, but also backing vocals. Now, there are five of them on tour and they enjoy the full band sound: »The band is an even larger musical sofa on which you can relax,« says Jonathan. »It is cool when a song also works as a duet, but grows again and becomes even bigger with the band,« adds Ronja.

Spangenberg plays Nirvana

The idea of performing the songs of the legendary grunge band Nirvana on just the piano is obvious and unimaginable in equal measure. Two worlds that couldn’t be more different collide, yet they are emotionally far more similar than they may seem. Unlike Nirvana, Christoph Spangenberg will hopefully not be destroying any pianos, but he will be using all means at his disposal to bring classics such as »About a Girl«, »Come as You Are« and »Smells Like Teen Spirit« to the piano in his unique style. Without drums, bass or singing – but with years of experience in various musical fields, from jazz to hip-hop and techno. The music of the globally celebrated early-90s band with distorted guitar and screaming vocals is brimming with punk – and has a very different feel to the grand piano with its classical elegance. Imagine what would have happened had Kurt Cobain not only spat on Elton John’s piano at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, but sat down to play it. Presumably it would have fallen victim, just like all the band’s other instruments, to the musicians’ destructive nature.

A large box under the attic. In it: love letters. Dozens of love letters, from men from all over the world, written over decades to a woman whose life was as exciting exciting as well as mysterious. From this starting point, Emilíana Torrini has developed Miss Flower, her first solo album in ten years, which will be released in June this year. What sounds like an absurd fairy tale or the opening to a family novel really happened to Torrini: after the death of the mother of one of her closest friends, they found the box of love letters in her flat, neatly sorted into folders. Using the medium of »biographical fiction«, as Torrini calls the project, she approaches the wonderful Miss Flower through the eyes of her lovers. In doing so, she tells a story of love and desire, but also of independence, freedom and self-determination.
