Baby concerts at the Essen Philharmonic enchant both young and old with instrumental sounds. In a relaxed atmosphere, babies discover the world of music together with their parents and grandparents, carried by sounds, experiencing melodies, tones, and diverse listening experiences - participation included.
Baby concerts at the Essen Philharmonic enchant both young and old with instrumental sounds. In a relaxed atmosphere, babies discover the world of music together with their parents and grandparents, carried by sounds, experiencing melodies, tones, and diverse listening experiences - participation included.
For our "Expedition TIRILI" we usually travel light and without an elaborate stage set to the daycare centres of Berlin and Brandenburg. Now the "Expedition TIRILI" is also making a stop in the rank foyer of the Deutsche Oper Berlin for a few play dates and invites you to experience the sounds on the sand-coloured carpet and on brightly coloured seat cushions. Children are a great audience: open, curious, enthusiastic. They miss neither curtain nor orchestra pit and have no fixed idea of how an audience should behave. They are born explorers. And two musicians accompany them on their musical-theatrical voyage of discovery. Together they ask themselves: How are sounds created? What is music made of? Who or what is this mysterious TIRILI? For "Expedition TIRILI" we worked together with children from the Kastanienallee day-care centre in cooperation with TUKI. In the run-up, we experimented with sounds and themes in the nursery. This process flowed into the development of the production.
Music is shaped not only by diverse tones and melodies but also by incredibly versatile rhythms and tempos. From spirited to melancholic, slow to fast, we explore the rhythmic variety in music. Clap, sneak, and dance along in the children's concert Takt auf, Takt ab!
For children 3–7 years old.Get close to the musicians in the Grünewald Hall – and discover the orchestra's instruments in a classical concert with listening games, together with a music teacher. At this concert you will meet the orchestra's brass instruments.After this approx. 30-minute concert, there is a chance to try out different instruments in the foyer.***The possibility of bringing a pram into Konserthuset is very limited, so please consider leaving the pram at home.

Bernhard Lang's Playing Trump 2021, a contemporary composer, traces the words of a despot, collected in peacetime and set to music during wartime. The rhetoric of power shamelessly inverts murderous plans, elevating hypocrisy and blatant lies to principles. The libretto by Dieter Sperl exposes the contradictions and justifications for war.
Becoming ubiquitous in recent years, loop stations allow any musical sequence to be recorded, repeated again and again, and layered. Using looping, Robin Cavaillès creates an entire show mixing singing, beatbox and instruments.
The Essen Philharmonic offers regular behind-the-scenes tours for children. They get to explore backstage areas, see where artists prepare, learn how the concert hall sounds. After the one-hour tour, a 30-minute workshop is available for kids.
Elementary school children and older are invited to learn more about the Kuhn organ in the Alfried Krupp Hall. The tour, specially designed for young visitors, lasts about an hour.

Students explore the meaning of symbols and signals in music through two works by contemporary composer Nicolaus A. Huber, heard live at the NOW! Festival. Bells and the number "four" (representing wholeness and order) serve as key symbols. Students compose their own music, culminating in a concert performance.

“Parental Leave” concerts are aimed at all new mothers and fathers (as well as uncles, aunts, grand parents…) who would like to experience music together with their babies in a relaxed setting. The number of seats is limited, and all amenities to make your visit as pleasant as possible are provided in the lobby. These concerts, featuring Pierre Boulez Saal artists performing excerpts from their programs, are approximately 45 minutes long and intended exclusively for visitors with babies aged 12 months and younger.
