Have you ever walked around the Old Town in Warsaw and along the cobbled streets from the Castle Square to the New Town Square? If so, you must know that you’ve walked in the footsteps of the old times, when Warsaw became the capital of Poland and King Sigismund III took up residence in the Royal Castle. To find out more about those times, all you have to do is come to the Philharmonic. We’ll tell you what secrets are hidden in the streets of the Old Town, what the fashionable clothes and games used to be. We’ll show you how music was played in the royal chambers and present beautiful instruments characteristic of those times. The concert will include instrumental pieces, court and feast songs, and will be accompanied by historical dance.

Does the cello have so many fans because it is most similar to the human voice? At least that's what cellists like to say about their instrument, which became the new star in string heaven during the Romantic period. Since the Baroque era, the violin had been the undisputed queen, with the cello relegated to the continuo with the double bass. Antonín Dvořák also had to make friends with the cello, which was sometimes derided as a “sorrow box” due to its pronounced melancholic qualities. As a guest in the USA, he finally wrote a great dance-like concerto for the instrument, which became a favorite piece from his pen around the world, rich in melody and virtuoso. The family concert title “Hello Cello!” is a greeting with which we and our audience aged 8 and over welcome artist in residence Sheku Kanneh-Mason, his wonderful instrument and the Dvořák concert. And an exclamation of surprised admiration: Hello - what this cello can do!

There music weaves intriguing tales and is always keen to imitate the characters and sounds of its surroundings. Would you like to hear what it’ll present to us this time?

A Clay Vase

Among FeNek’s clutter, there’s an old clay vase. Just an ordinary vase, slightly dusty, a family heirloom... but don’t let that fool you! It’s not ordinary at all. Whenever music is played in the Concert Hall, wavy patterns always appear on it. A long line flashes when violinists draw their bows, tiny dots appear when a pianist’s fingers make a tinkling sound, or a little mouse flits by as a choir sings about it. The patterns and shapes change as quickly as the colourful sounds in the music. Attention! All music lovers are cordially invited to a great display of virtuosity! A trumpet in one corner, percussion in another, and a piano between them. The viola, often underestimated, will try to reconcile them. Each instrument will showcase its unique capabilities. What do you think – will they perform better solo, or is it worth joining forces and playing as an ensemble? Younger and older listeners will be told about the history and construction of these instruments. We’ll also consider why they sound so dignified, while not shying away from numerous musical embellishments.
