VISUAL MUSIC NIGHT I

Fri, Feb 7, 2025, 21:00
Konzerthaus Berlin, Werner-Otto-Saal (Berlin)
Simon Höfele (Trumpet), Thomas Pfaffinger (Composition), Thomas Pfaffinger (Stage), Kaan Bulak (Composition), Kaan Bulak (Stage), Lucas Gutierrez (Visuals), Istanbul Ghetto Club (Audiovisual Live-Set), Lucilla Schmidinger (Dramaturgy)
Three sets, ranging from experimental soundscapes and electronic compositions to hypnotizing beats, each in combination with visual forms of expression - a broad spectrum of audiovisual performance art and artistic reflection await you on the opening evening of our festival! “mirror//flesh” for trumpet and electronics questions the relationship between artist and audience and addresses self-reflection in the performing arts. The interplay of sound, space, light and choreographic elements dissolves the boundaries between listening and watching. “Resonance of Berlin”, an audiovisual homage to Berlin, uses AI-supported sound and image compositions to present an artistic ‘city map’ that captures personal and collective perceptions of the metropolis. The performance allows the audience to experience its complexity in a new way and invites them to reflect on the influence of perception on artistic creation.Istanbul Ghetto Club, a multidisciplinary Berlin music collective with a sense of humor and an erotic touch, combines Anatolian, Greek and Mesopotamian melodies with modular synthesizers, visuals and performing arts. They hide behind masks and veils, but have nothing to hide. Anatolian Acid” emerges from tradition and zeitgeist, sweeping the audience away in a live performance and inviting them to dance. Jewish Music Night

Tue, Mar 19, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
The Brooklyn Cantors, Voices of Yemen, The Piyut Ensemble
Sacral and spiritual music is the focus of this three-part evening that brings together Jewish singing traditions from several continents. The Piyut Ensemble takes its name from a form of religious Jewish poetry. Synagogue songs and music from North Africa and the Middle East are the sources of inspiration for its spiritual and artistic work, which is deeply rooted in the Jewish faith and Jewish ceremonies. The band Yemen Blues received unanimous acclaim from the audience here back in the Elbphilharmonie’s opening year. Almost seven years later, their singer Ravid Kahalani returns to Hamburg with his equally exciting ensemble Voices of Yemen. Jewish-Yemeni songs intoned with an amazing rawness to the accompaniment of an electric guitar, percussion and the relentlessly pulsating bass of Shanir Blumenkranz promise once more to lead the Hamburg audience to a state of trance, joy and ecstasy. For a number of years now, young Hassidic singers in Brooklyn have been intensively searching together for the synagogue songs of their ancestors. Sound recordings from the pre-war era provide valuable points of reference for producing historically accurate yet individual interpretations. The strong, beautiful singing exudes an uplifting joy and optimism, which probably gave their ancestors strength and solace as they experienced persecution, expulsion and flight, and were forced to start new lives in foreign countries. The Brooklyn Cantors’ programme also includes a song by Yossele Rosenblatt, who worked in Hamburg from 1906 until 1912, before he made it big in the USA. Rosenblatt is still regarded as one of the greatest cantors of all time. This video gives a taste of the Brooklyn Cantors’ impressive singing.

Fri, Nov 8, 2024, 20:00
Wolfram Brandl (Violin), Lifan Zhu (Violin), Yulia Deyneka (Viola), Sennu Laine (Cello), Elisaveta Blumina (Piano)
For more than six decades, the chamber concerts by musicians from the Staatskapelle have been a constant feature of the Staatsoper programme. This season, ensembles have come together to select music from different periods, styles and cultures under the theme of ‘playing together’. On eleven dates in the Apollosaal, which with its special atmosphere is an ideal venue for chamber music and communicative interaction between players and listeners, works from the Baroque to the present day will be performed in constellations that are both exciting and harmonious, in which tangible contrasts play just as important a role as a common resonance and the balancing of opposites.

Abonnementkonzert II

Mon, Oct 7, 2024, 19:00
Christian Thielemann (Conductor), Igor Levit (Piano)
