VISUAL MUSIC NIGHT II

Fri, Feb 14, 2025, 21:00
Konzerthaus Berlin, Werner-Otto-Saal (Berlin)
REICH / BAUMGÄRTNER / PRINGLE, Maria Reich (Violin), Moritz Baumgärtner (Drums), Mark Pringle (Piano), ChunLi Wang (Visuals), Rachel Fenlon (Piano), Rachel Fenlon (Voice), Rachel Fenlon (Electronic), Jamie A. MacMillan (Video), Wolfgang Voigt (Sound), Ali M. Demirel (Visuals), Lucilla Schmidinger (Dramaturgy)
Our second Visual Music Night Werner-Otto-Saal offers you a poetic-synaesthetic experience in three sets. “Poème” is the debut album (2022) of the Berlin trio Reich / Baumgärtner / Pringle, who create a sound network of dense, playful communication in the rare combination of piano, violin & drums/percussion. Their unmistakable joint sound entices you to pause and listen, is multi-layered, delicate, irrepressible and concise. ChunLi Wang's visuals add another playful layer to this set, creating fluid transitions between technology and anthropology, opening up a poetic immersive world. The novel song cycle “Sing Nature Alive” composed by McIntire is based on poetic lyrics about the love of nature and the urgency of the climate crisis. Rachel Fenlon interprets it with voice, piano and live electronics, complemented by Macmillan's nature videos. Voice and piano combine with field recordings of water, nature and breathing to create a continuous dream-like texture. Moving, haunting and thought-provoking, the “songs” emerge in full form or rise up as traces, only to sink back into the blur. The second Visual Music Night ends with “Rückverzauberung”, an almost hour-long ambient trip through more than three centuries of music history: medieval lute and flute sounds interweave with baroque falsetto song fragments, bells and horns to create amorphous, abstract soundscapes. Small spinet and harp loops tumble intoxicatedly over feverishly beautiful violin surfaces. Atonality and euphony flow effortlessly into and out of each other. Voigt's principles of loops and deconstruction redefine old sound worlds. Ali M. Demirel enriches the set with his live visuals, in which the wonders of nature with their sometimes microscopic patterns are revived into abstract images.

Night Session I: TIMING

Sat, Oct 26, 2024, 21:30
Konzerthaus Berlin, Großer Saal (Berlin)
Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Joana Mallwitz (Conductor), zu Gast: Schauspieler Matthias Brandt (Actor)
“We tell ourselves stories through good music,” our chief conductor Joana Mallwitz is convinced. And that's why this season there will once again be two Night Sessions, which she has developed with and for the Konzerthaus Berlin. The concerts with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, which begin at 9.30 pm on Saturdays, always revolve around a theme that she presents in an unusual stage setting and to which a guest contributes a different perspective on the topic. In this series, the unifying element is the right feeling for the right moment - without perfect timing, there can be no perfect interplay to captivate the audience. This is just as true for a symphony orchestra as it is for an actor: our guest is the well-known theater, film and television actor Matthias Brandt, who played the Munich detective Hanns von Meuffels in the ARD crime series “Polizeiruf 110”. Born in 1961 and the youngest son of the German Chancellor from 1969 to 1974, Willy Brandt, and his wife Rut, the artist grew up in Bonn right in the political centre of old Western Germany. A few years ago, he published a collection of prose miniatures about his childhood under the title “Raumpatrouille” (Space Patrol).

Jewish Music Night

Tue, Mar 19, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
The Brooklyn Cantors, Voices of Yemen, The Piyut Ensemble
Sacral and spiritual music is the focus of this three-part evening that brings together Jewish singing traditions from several continents. The Piyut Ensemble takes its name from a form of religious Jewish poetry. Synagogue songs and music from North Africa and the Middle East are the sources of inspiration for its spiritual and artistic work, which is deeply rooted in the Jewish faith and Jewish ceremonies. The band Yemen Blues received unanimous acclaim from the audience here back in the Elbphilharmonie’s opening year. Almost seven years later, their singer Ravid Kahalani returns to Hamburg with his equally exciting ensemble Voices of Yemen. Jewish-Yemeni songs intoned with an amazing rawness to the accompaniment of an electric guitar, percussion and the relentlessly pulsating bass of Shanir Blumenkranz promise once more to lead the Hamburg audience to a state of trance, joy and ecstasy. For a number of years now, young Hassidic singers in Brooklyn have been intensively searching together for the synagogue songs of their ancestors. Sound recordings from the pre-war era provide valuable points of reference for producing historically accurate yet individual interpretations. The strong, beautiful singing exudes an uplifting joy and optimism, which probably gave their ancestors strength and solace as they experienced persecution, expulsion and flight, and were forced to start new lives in foreign countries. The Brooklyn Cantors’ programme also includes a song by Yossele Rosenblatt, who worked in Hamburg from 1906 until 1912, before he made it big in the USA. Rosenblatt is still regarded as one of the greatest cantors of all time. This video gives a taste of the Brooklyn Cantors’ impressive singing.

Mon, Oct 14, 2024, 20:00
Peter Rainer (Violin), Tobias Sturm (Violin), Andreas Willwohl (Viola), Sebastian Posch (French horn), Dana Sturm (Piano)

Chamber Music I: The young gaze

Wed, Oct 23, 2024, 20:00
The orchestra's academy students are young musicians who are starting their careers at our orchestra. Enthusiasm and the search for one's own path are characteristics that young people in particular bring with them. This freshness can also be found in the programme for the first chamber concert of the season: works by young composers show that the first steps in a musical career can be full of surprises. But we also show that a "young" or new perspective is not only found in young minds.

Handel's baroque magic opera "Rinaldo" and Verdi's opera comedy "Falstaff" are the experimental fields for directing students. In their productions, directing and singing students regularly dedicate themselves to both great traditional works of the opera world and lesser-known music theatre, showing the audience their perspectives on this repertoire.
