George Frideric Handel, a true European, a superstar of the Baroque era, composed music in abundance – including the »Messiah« with the world-famous »Hallelujah«. »Das Lied von der Erde« – so schlicht dieser Titel ist, so ungemein viel verbirgt sich hinter diesem Spätwerk Mahlers, das halb Liederzyklus ist und halb Sinfonie. Es gehört zum Besten aus seiner Feder: die Musik hypersinnlich, die Texte extrem atmosphärisch. Ein großes Lied wie aus einer anderen Welt. Auf der Basis von Nachdichtungen altchinesischer Lyrik hat Mahler einen allumfassenden Abgesang komponiert, ein Abschiednehmen von der Erde, vom Leben, das Alain Altinoglu und das hr-Sinfonieorchester mit zwei exzellenten Solisten realisiert. Und wie geht es jenseits weiter? »Metacosmos«, diesen Titel gab Anna Þorvaldsdóttir 2017 ihrem sinfonischen Gedicht, und es geht darin genau um die dunkle Reise, die über jeden Horizont hinaus geht. »Der Titel bezieht sich auf den Gedanken, in ein Schwarzes Loch zu fallen und an einem Ort anzukommen, den niemand kennt und über den Sie keine Kontrolle haben«, so die isländische Komponistin. Ihr ist darin eine Musik von fast Mahler’scher Atmosphäre gelungen, mal düster-amorph, mal von unwirklicher nordischer Schönheit. Konzertdauer: ca. 90 Minuten – keine Pause!

His songs reflect what the Viennese feel: in nonchalant style, Nino from Vienna has made dialect singing socially acceptable again, and has transported the Viennese song from traditional taverns to the trendy club scene. Not only has he accumulated a large fan base, he has also become a role model for many successful Austrian musicians who are now breathing new life into the genre. He just proved this in spring 2024 as part of »Die Besten aus Wien«, when André Heller brought together the who’s who of this lively scene on the Elbphilharmonie stage. Now Nino from Vienna is back in Hamburg with his new album »endlich Wienerlieder«. The album is dedicated to his grandfather, a Wienerlied singer, and pays homage to great traditions. As charming as ever, he sings about »the entire universe of human existence. As different as these songs are, they all show a lot of feeling: Nino, it seems, doesn’t give a shit. He just does it. And the result is usually good« (Die ZEIT). He never pretends to be something he isn’t. His stage name is the best example: Nino Mandl, who grew up on the outskirts of the Austrian capital, is Der Nino aus Wien: Nino from Vienna. Someone who sings about the banalities of everyday life and turns them into great music – simply and authentically, without ever exaggerating.
Hamburg-born, internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Okka von der Damerau and US conductor and pianist Levi Hammer met during a production of »Tristan und Isolde« in Los Angeles. It was there that the desire arose to meet artistically in Hamburg with a song recital. Johannes Brahms wrote many of his 200 songs for the alto Hermine Spies, who was famous throughout Europe in the late 20th century. She was only 36 years old and died shortly after her wedding and retreat into private life. Inspired by the songs dedicated to Hermine Spies and performed for the first time, the programme combines Brahms’ songs with Richard Wagner’s »Wesendonck Lieder« and is thus dedicated to the inexhaustible source of inspiration of unfulfilled love and longing.
For Gustav Mahler, escaping the world often meant living only for love and art. Sometimes, however, his otherworldly sounds also gently speak of death. The traditional Staatskapelle Berlin under Susanna Mälkki now dedicates itself to them. In the "Song of the Earth", joy in life and farewell to life find a colorful expression. Mälkki prefaces Mahler's moving late work with Kaija Saariaho's trumpet concerto "Hush", her poignant farewell to the world. Verneri Pohjola now interprets it.
