Spring

Thu, Mar 20, 2025, 19:30
Bruno Borralhinho (Conductor), Junges Sinfonieorchester Dresden am Landesgymnasium für Musik
"Everything rejoices and hopes when spring renews itself," said Friedrich Schiller. Right on time for the beginning of spring, the musicians of the Young Symphony Orchestra at the State High School for Music invite the audience on an exciting musical journey from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. Joseph Haydn's very special Symphony in F minor, "La passione," already suggests a connection between the Easter and Passion time and Ostara - the Germanic goddess of spring, fertility, and dawn. The inspiration for the program is also evident through the melodious Spring tributes of Frederik Delius, Jean Sibelius, or Lili Boulanger, with the musical journey also leading through distant and unique landscapes of the European continent: from the idyllic plains of England to the cool Parisian mornings and into the Finnish wilderness. Less picturesque, but brilliantly vivid, Antonín Dvorák explores the contrasting colors of the wilderness in a fascinating way in "The Wood Dove." Finally, Johann Strauss gifts us with light, warmth, and coziness in his waltz "Roses from the South."

Monday at Last with overtone singing

Mon, Apr 28, 2025, 19:00
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Cecilia Zilliacus (Violin), Gareth Lubbe (Viola), Gareth Lubbe (Throat song), Kati Raitinen (Cello), Peter Friis Johansson (Piano)
In Monday at Last, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen invite guest artists to perform both newer and older music. The guests this time are Swedish pianist Peter Friis Johansson and South African violist, composer, and overtone singer Gareth Lubbe. We get to hear the incredible possibilities and resources of the voice in Lubbe's Miniatures, where he uses a special singing technique to create a whole range of resonant overtones. It's a completely unique sound world that conveys the feeling of something magical and primal.British-American composer Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) was a highly skilled violist and a pioneer among female composers. Her Morpheus for viola and piano was first performed in 1918 at Carnegie Hall and was her first major success. After Schnittke's both wild and contemplative string trio, and Mozart's lively Duo, "Finally Monday" concludes with the rarely performed ecstatically charged piano quartet by Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä in a late romantic style.

Walking barefoot, enjoying the sun, playing outside in the evening ... not yet. Not quite yet. But very soon. Winter really will soon be over at the beginning of April. Let's see if we can speed things up a bit with the right music. The small chorus of the children's chorus and the generational chorus invite you to a spring sing-along in the foyer, where everyone will have the opportunity to sing along.

Boulanger / Beamish / Brahms / Seductive singing of the cello

Sat, Feb 22, 2025, 19:30
Benjamin Kruithof (Cello), Zhora Sargsyan (Piano)
Brahms wrote the Sonata in E minor for instruments close to his heart, i.e., piano and cello. At the premiere, the composer played very loudly, and when the cellist, a talented amateur, remarked to him, he replied: "lucky for you". Such a cover-up will not be necessary during the Katowice concert by the young virtuosos; we will be able to focus on the breathtaking dramatic nature of this work, which culminates in a fugal finale based on Contrapunctus 13 from Bach's Kunst der Fuge. Nadia Boulanger stopped composing after the untimely death of her sister Lili, whom she considered more talented than herself. Although, as a pedagogue, she later educated a considerable group of composers of the neo-classical movement, her music can also bring to mind the work of Debussy. In Three Pieces, we find a masterful combination of these tendencies. Sally Beamish enjoys singing the cello, so we can expect a new song for this instrument. Both have performed in a range of acclaimed and widely discussed productions at the Royal Swedish Opera. They have also enjoyed distinguished international careers. Now we get to experience them in Connection–Band–Saraband with choreography by Pär Isberg, inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film Saraband, which focuses on relationships. The music comes from Bach's cello suites, which were important to Bergman. This exciting Monday at Last concert also features music by Sibelius, Lera Auerbach, and Erwin Schulhoff, as well as Jonas S Bohlin's To Cecilia for solo violin and choreography, written in 2023 for the Katrina Festival in Åland, where Cecilia Zilliacus is the artistic director.
