Now he sets out into the world: Siegfried, the free hero, is to set right what Wotan, the father of the gods, messed up at the beginning of the story. Finally, part three of Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelung" can be experienced in Kent Nagano's original sound project. Siegfried grows up in the forest, reforges the sword Nothung, slays the dragon Fafner, wins from him the "Ring of the Nibelung", breaks Wotan's spear and lovingly awakens the Valkyrie Brünnhilde.

The two middle sections of the tetralogy set out two ways of experiencing life. On the one hand we are presented in THE VALKYRIE with Brünnhilde, whose maturation process takes her from her discovery of sorrow and empathy to a conscious reflection on what it is to be human. By contrast, Siegfried’s path is mapped out solely as a function of his sensory experience. Where initially the young man’s self-image stems only from his exploration of his own boundless strength, other senses and sensibilities soon come to bear, along with an awakening sexuality. SIEGFRIED presents an encounter not only between man and woman but between two principles – Siegfried’s innate, unquestioned vigour on one side and Brünnhilde’s wisdom born of observation on the other. And as these two diametrical forces unite in a love clinch, the end of the opera seems to be presenting the basis for a renewal of human society.

Claire Keegan is a master of the literary short form, whose precise and powerful prose is recognised worldwide and makes Irish literature shine in the international literary landscape. The author will be honoured with the Siegfried Lenz Prize 2024. To kick off her visit to Hamburg, Claire Keegan introduces herself to the German public in the Rolf Liebermann Studio. In conversation with NDR Kultur editor Jan Ehlert, she will talk about her work, which includes novels such as »Small Things like These«, »Foster« and the recently published »So Late in the Day«.
