For 25 years, curator and cellist Götz Teutsch has been bringing music and literature together in the Philharmonic Salon. A wide variety of cultural worlds have been experienced. The series has presented the Mendelssohn family and their guests, traced the travels of the legendary Casanova, and brought Gustav Mahler's Vienna to life. This anniversary concert, featuring actor Heikko Deutschmann and soprano Anna Prohaska with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, is all about art and kitsch – two worlds that are particularly captivating when they overlap.

A Viennese music salon at the turn of the 20th century, perhaps Berta Zuckerkandl's, where Alma and Gustav Mahler first met. Some of Alma Mahler's 16 surviving songs will be heard. Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden, 20 years older, studied with Mahler. Evelyn Faltis, sharing Alma's Wagner enthusiasm, arrived in Vienna in 1905. Her sensual music is comparable to Richard Strauss's.

Most people know Carl Maria von Weber as the creator of the opera Der Freischütz. But he was much more than that: a highly-gifted pianist and conductor, an astute musical commentator, and an innovative composer who decisively influenced the characteristic sound and instrumentation of Romantic music. Using contemporary texts read by the actor Max Simonischek, the Philharmonic Salon with depict Weber’s life, with all its highs and lows. The musical accompaniment will be provided by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the pianist Cordelia Höfer.

Violinist Angelika Bachmann from Salut Salon and pianist Professor Jacques Ammon invite you to the annual children’s concert in the Grand Hall of Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle. The outstanding young prizewinners of the Hamburg Instrumental Competition will perform. The virtuoso skills of the children and young people, the varied programme, the grand joint finale and the loving concert atmosphere make the children’s concert unique every year. Prof Walter Gehlert first invited prizewinners of the Hamburg Instrumental Competition to play on the big stage in 1983. Since then, a good 3,000 young instrumentalists have been able to gain memorable performance experience.
