Robert Henke

Fri, Feb 7, 2025, 20:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Robert Henke (Live electronics)
Robert Henke comes to Hamburg with his award-winning production »CBM 8032 AV«. Behind the cryptic title is one of the first home computers from Commodore, who revolutionised the world 40 years ago. With a whole series of these bedrocks, Henke devises an audio-visual concert experience, which, according to the artist, circles around the »ambivalence between contemporary aesthetics and the use of outdated, limited technology«. Since the 1990s, Henke has been firmly rooted on the electronic music scene with his project Monolake and has, amongst other things, co-developed the ground-breaking music software Ableton. For several years, the passionate musician, composer and artist has also been interested in visual art and combines his sound experiments with laser and LED shows. And he does so successfully: Henke has already performed internationally at the Tate Museum in London, MoMa PS1 in New York and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Robert Schumann: Genoveva

Wed, Jun 11, 2025, 20:00
Chen Reiss (Soprano), Johannes Weisser (Bariton), Benjamin Bruns (Tenor), Thomas Faulkner (Bass), Valentina Stadler (Mezzo-Soprano), Leon Košavić (Bariton), Audi Jugendchorakademie, Le Cercle de l’Harmonie (Ensemble), Jérémie Rhorer (Conductor)

Bill Laurance & Michael League

Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Bill Laurance (Piano), Michael League (Bass), Michael League (Oud)
You can hardly talk about Michael League and Bill Laurance without mentioning Snarky Puppy. American bassist and multi-instrumentalist Michael League founded the globally acclaimed, four-time Grammy award-winning collective almost 20 years ago. And British pianist and keyboardist Bill Laurance has been part of this global adventure for almost as long. The fact that League and Laurance are presenting their first joint duo album with »Where you wish you were« seems both surprising and logical.

Christian Sands Quartet

Tue, Mar 5, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Christian Sands Quartet, Christian Sands (Piano), Max Light (Guitar), Jonathon Muir-Cotton (Bass), Ryan Sands (Drums)
At the age of just 34, the American pianist Christian Sands can already look back on a quite picture-perfect career: he took up the piano at aged four, wrote his first compositions at five, and his first album followed at twelve. He went on to study with jazz ambassador Billy Taylor, played with bassist Christian McBride and has since recorded eight albums. Now Sands is bringing his quartet to the Elbphilharmonie. The New Yorker relies in his playing on a powerful swinging tempo combined with sophisticated technical finesse. His reputation as a superb live entertainer precedes him. Besides his own compositions, Sands also takes a look far back into jazz history – with Jonathon Muir-Cotton on bass, Max Light on guitar and his brother Ryan Sands on drums. He incorporates and transforms old and not-so-old heroes of piano playing like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau with incredible ease. The »Süddeutsche Zeitung« newspaper once coined this »entrümpelte Klassiker« (»decluttered classics«).
