Those who understand themselves and others Will come to realize: Orient and Occident Can no longer be separated. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, West-Eastern Divan And they never could, one might like to add. Jordi Savall is an artist who has long made this case—in his multifaceted work, he has repeatedly drawn connections between the music of the European Middle Ages or Renaissance and diverse Arab, Persian, and Northern African musical traditions, which influenced each other over the course of centuries in transcultural hubs across the Mediterranean. At the Pierre Boulez Saal, he is joined by oud player Waed Bouhassoun, leader of the ensemble Orpheus 21, which was founded by Savall, and members of Hespèrion XXI.

No other musician combines works from bygone eras with a topical message to such powerful effect: Jordi Savall – viola da gamba player, conductor, musicologist and star of the early music scene. His new programme »War and Peace« is a diverse musical fresco that evokes an age of battles and ceasefires, starting with the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War in 1618 and ending with the Peace Treaty of Aix-la-Chappelle in 1748. »The emotion of the music linked here to the historic events allows us, perhaps, to see everything in a new light,« says the Catalan conductor, who was named UNESCO »Artist of Peace« in 2009. Savall is travelling to Hamburg not only with a wealth of great music, but also with his early music instrumental ensembles Hespèrion XXI and Le Concert des Nations, and his ten-strong vocal ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya. On their search for the authentic sound of the age, they play music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The orchestras are complemented by four musicians from Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, who enrich the music with oriental sounds. However, the concert comes to a close with Arvo Pärt’s prayer for peace »Da pacem Domine«, which he composed in 2004 in memory of the victims of the Madrid bombings.

Mozart: Great Mass in C minor / Jordi Savall

Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Le Concert des Nations, La Capella Nacional de Catalunya, Giulia Bolcato (Soprano), Elionor Martínez (Soprano), Lara Morger (Mezzo-Soprano), David Fischer (Tenor), Matthias Winckhler (Bass), Jordi Savall (Conductor)
It is considered one of the great unfinished works in the history of music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s »Great Mass« in C minor. He probably composed it following his wedding to singer Constanze Weber; unlike with his Requiem, at least Mozart’s death did not prevent the completion of the mass. Although remaining fragmentary, this outstanding mass setting is touching to this day due to its direct expressive power. With his Le Concert des Nations established in 1989, Catalan gambist, music researcher and conductor Jordi Savall had already often been a guest in Hamburg. As an expert in early music and historical performance practice, he consistently gives the audience new listening experiences – in particular with frequently played works. Because Savall is not only interested in music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, but he also elicits new aspects from the seemingly well-known classics. The ensemble and its conductor recently demonstrated this in 2021, for instance, with their Beethoven cycle; now, they tackle Mozart’s »Great Mass«.

Robert Schumann's only opera is among the most unconventional and important music dramas of the Romantic period. The original sound ensemble Le Cercle de l'Harmonie and its founder Jérémie Rhorer now reveal the astonishing modernity of this masterpiece. The knowledgeable conductor and his special ensemble, Genoveva, tell the story of Siegfried, Count Palatine's wife who is falsely accused of infidelity by his vassal. Schumann's opera, which has a happy ending, thrives on an unheard-of inner tension.

Gustavo Dudamel (Conductor), Bavarian Radio Chorus, Andrew Lepri Meyer (Tenor), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Once again Gustavo Dudamel will be a guest of the BRSO! Now this principal conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has dreamt up something special for his five short concerts: a Schumann cycle, something never heard before in such concentration at the BRSO. It’s a musical portrait of a genius who was only inspired to write his own symphonies after stumbling upon Schubert’s Great C-major Symphony. The series features the Spring Symphony in B-flat major, the Second in C major, the Rhenish in E-flat major and the Fourth in D minor. Rounding off the Schumann feast are a cappella choral works by José Antonio Abreu, Antonio Estévez and Modesta Bor. The three poignant miniatures, including a love song after Pablo Neruda, shed revealing light on the soul of Latin America and send a musical greeting from Dudamel to his native Venezuela.
