»Yes, just love him, love him so much – but don’t forget that he achieved poetic freedom after years of study, go back to the foundation of his work, don’t prove his genius through the last symphony!« Schumann said this about Beethoven – and it is indeed the case that the Symphony No. 4, which Jakub Hrůša has chosen for this programme, is often treated somewhat like a Cinderella among the nine symphonies. Quite wrongly, because it is an equally masterful composition: it stands in B flat major, which is an expression of the »yearning for a better world« according to the symbolism of musical keys of a certain Mr Schubart, and is characterised by a friendly tone with many wonderful ideas. Our Chief Conductor combines it with an equally neglected piece from the pen of his beloved composer Dvořák. We will be playing the fascinating piano concerto together with the acclaimed pianist Daniil Trifonov: the wide-ranging work was premiered in Prague in 1878 and features a magnificent richness of deeply felt inspirations. We will first present the programme in Bamberg, but then also in Linz – and also travel to the birthplace of Jakub Hrůša, where we have something to celebrate: 1924 was the first time that the »Year of Czech Music« was celebrated.

There is only one direction known to Alexandre Kantorow’s career, and that is up! Since winning the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, the young French pianist has ascended to the highest echelons of the global classical music scene like few before him. This evening is the crowning glory of Kantorow’s residence concerts during this Elbphilharmonie season and sees him come together on stage with some illustrious colleagues: the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal under the direction of Yannick Nezet-Seguin. Nezet-Seguin has been principal conductor of the most important orchestra in his Canadian hometown for 23 years now. During his tenure he has managed to shape the Orchestre Métropolitain into a truly world-class ensemble. After opening the evening with Maurice Ravel’s savage parody of the sound world of the Viennese waltz, they delve, together with Kantorow, into a no less dizzying ride on the razor’s edge: Camille Saint-Saëns’ highly virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2. The dark, veiled world of a freely fantasizing introduction is followed by a malleable scherzo that comes across as the incarnation of French elegance. Anyone astounded by the frenzied runs of this movement should brace themselves for the breakneck finale! After the interval, Piotr Tchaikovsky’s harrowing Symphony No. 6 brings the evening to a serious close.

Barefoot or heels? No question for trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary, even in the Berlin winter. With bare feet, she feels the vibrations of the music directly and also feels “much more comfortable on stage, almost like at home.” But there is no trace of eccentricity - the 25-year-old Frenchwoman, who says that the trumpet is her voice, comes across as natural and grounded, whether she is playing jazz or classical repertoire. With the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Hummel's radiant trumpet concerto and other works for trumpet and orchestra, she will give you an atmospheric Advent concert evening under the chandeliers in the magnificent Great Hall.
