Der Philosoph Walter Benjamin hat Paris einmal als »Hauptstadt des 19. Jahrhunderts« bezeichnet. Die Metropole an der Seine übte auch auf Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky, der hier oft zu Besuch war, und Manfred Trojahn eine starke Faszination aus. Der in Niedersachsen geborene Trojahn pendelt seit Jahren zwischen seiner Heimat und der französischen Hauptstadt. »Ich bewege mich tatsächlich immer in einem Dazwischen«, sagt er über das Leben in zwei unterschiedlichen Kulturen. Der französische Einfluss zeigt sich in seiner Musik in einer gewissen Klarheit und im Spiel der Orchesterfarben. In »Je suis l’idée maîîtresse« zusätzlich im Text des französischen Dichters Paul Valéry, einem Meister der Mehrdeutigkeit. Aus Tschaikowskys 6. Sinfonie, der »Pathétique«, klingen dann hingegen vor allem russische Melancholie und dunkle Tragik. Es war sein letztes Werk, wenige Tage nach der Uraufführung starb der Komponist.
