Date & Time
Tue, Jun 18, 2024, 19:30
The NDR’s chamber concert season comes to a close with the ultimate genre in chamber music: the programme selected by the Noah Quartet – which is made up of musicians from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra – features three string quartets. The enigmatic standalone Quartet Movement in C minor is one of the numerous scattered pieces of individual movements that Franz Schubert never completed. Its tragic, shimmering energy makes it impossible not to lament Schubert’s failure to go further than this... Read full text

Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet in C minor is one of the composers most personal works. There are striking allusions to Wagner’s »Götterdämmerung« and Tchaikovsky’s confessional symphony »Pathétique«. But Shostakovich also immortalised himself, with themes from earlier works as well as the musical code D-Es-C-H. The piece was composed in 1960 during a visit to Dresden, which was destroyed in 1945. The horrors of the destruction shocked Shostakovich so much that he dedicated the quartet to the victims of war and fascism.

Fullness, density, basis – this is what the double bass stands for. The wooden giant not only lends the great symphonic works, but also chamber music, a tonal softness and depth that surrounds and complements the sound of its higher siblings.

Johannes Brahms, an early admirer of Bach and Beethoven, only discovered his love for Schubert relatively late. He felt it all the more intensely – and the more the Austrian composer eventually rose in his esteem. For many years, he was an unofficial contributor to the first major Schubert complete edition – and in this way became a profound connoisseur of Schubert’s works.

It is a pleasing tradition that the Christmas season is also generally regarded as the time for the sound of brass instruments – a wide variety of literature for the most diverse brass ensembles is available and is cultivated in a special way at Christmas. Once again, the brass section of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra joins this tradition.

It is appealing to juxtapose two of the central pieces of Dvořák’s chamber music, of which the Piano Quintet op. 81 is probably the best known, in a concert – this was the idea behind the composition of the programme. Composed during Dvořák’s »Slavic period« in the 1870s, the quartet impressively combines suggestions from the stricter compositional style of Brahms – Dvořák’s declared role model – with the typical Czech folk style and deliberately simple, folk-like music-making. There is an obvious tendency to sing the melodies out widely, especially in the night piece of the second movement.
