It is appealing to juxtapose two of the central pieces of Dvořák’s chamber music, of which the Piano Quintet op. 81 is probably the best known, in a concert – this was the idea behind the composition of the programme. Composed during Dvořák’s »Slavic period« in the 1870s, the quartet impressively combines suggestions from the stricter compositional style of Brahms – Dvořák’s declared role model – with the typical Czech folk style and deliberately simple, folk-like music-making. There is an obvious tendency to sing the melodies out widely, especially in the night piece of the second movement.

Compared to the string quartet, the string trio is »missing« a violin. This combination of instruments is far rarer, but boasts just as long a tradition as the quartet. Trio Bardo presents three string trios that were composed in the early- to mid-twentieth century, juxtaposed with a famous trio by Ludwig van Beethoven. Gideon Klein wrote his String Trio under tragic circumstances in the Theresienstadt ghetto in September and October 1944. Just a few days later, the 25-year-old Jewish composer was transported to the extermination camp. Echoes of Stravinsky, Bartók and Moravian folk music are blended with Klein’s own powerful and ironic style. Beethoven’s String Trios Op. 9 come from his first creative period in Vienna, and he experiments here with a number of techniques that would later become his trademarks. Although the work is written as a trio, double stops in the viola part sometimes create the impression of a string quartet. Beethoven described the trios, understandably, as »his best compositions so far«. George Enescu composed the morning serenade »Aubade« in 1899. That was a breakthrough year in the Romanian-born composer and violin virtuoso’s career, taking him to music venues across Europe and as far afield as America. It wasn’t until much later that he enjoyed a comparable level of success as a composer. In the first half of the twentieth century, Ernst von Dohnányi – alongside Kodály and Bartók – was among the leading figures in Hungarian musical life. His Serenade in C Major was written in 1903 and plays with a variety of composition techniques and forms.

Rhythm and power – two words that perfectly describe the first work of the evening, »180 beats per minute«. In the early 1990s, Jörg Widmann, who is a widely sought-after composer and clarinettist (and recently became the NDR Radiophilharmonie’s First Guest Conductor), drew inspiration from the infamous techno nights of the era. The result is a work that, as the composer himself put it, represents »pure zest for life and pure love of rhythm« – and one that is still often performed today. Erwin Schulhoff, the Prague enfant terrible of the 1920s, contributed a very special sextet to the genre. While he remained true to the four-movement structure of his predecessors, Schulhoff ends his sextet with a profound adagio rather than a fast-paced finale. Premiered in 1924, the work has now been included by the NDR ensemble Polygon on their programme again in honour of the work’s 100th anniversary. The first of the two Johannes Brahms string sextets was premiered to great acclaim in Hanover in 1860. Yet the publishers were initially sceptical – ensemble music for a sextet of strings was not very common. For the young Brahms, however, the string sextets meant the beginning of his breakthrough as a composer. Their enormous popularity continues to secure them a place on concert programmes around the world to this day.
